Chapter 2 - This Isn't The End
I stared at her. But her back was to me and she was leaning away from me. Her friend though, gave me a weird look. I realized what I was doing.
Matty hit my arm and pointed to my carry on bag. I handed it to him to put away. I was still in a daze and I had no reason to. This flight is still going to be long as hell and I was still going to be uncomfortable. I just need to calm down, take a breath. I watched Matty find room for my bag.
But I turned my head again and met eyes with her.
Matty sat down, gave me a confused scowl as if to say 'your acting weird', and leaned forward, "Hi ladies I'm Matt." He said putting his hand out for them to shake.
The girl with blonde hair in the window seat reached across the green-eyed girl to shake his hand. The girl I've been staring at quickly shook Matty's hand. But looked at me.
"Call him Matty, Everyone else does." I said looking at her green eyes.
"Okay, What do we call you?" She replied quickly.
"Uhh. Ezra." I said holding out my shaking hand. I'm a dumb ass. First I stutter now my hand is shaking. I just did a awkward half smile and shook her hand. The blonde girl reached around her and shook my hand.
"I'm Camryn and this is Zoie."
Camryn was her name. I repeated it to myself over and over and over until it was branded in my brain.
"Where are you guys going when we land?" The blonde girl asked. I had already forgotten her name.
"My aunt is opening up a shop in down town London."
"Oh cool. Sounds like fun." Camryn said.
"Hope so," I added awkwardly, "Where are you going?" I asked her.
"Just touring." She looked up at me. Those eyes. I mean wow. They have a gray tone to them and you just get lost in them.
"Oh fun. Are you from Colorado?" I asked trying to keep the conversation going. Matty didn't seem very interested; he was content with reading a magazine.
"Yeah, born and raised," she laughed a little before smiling at me, "You?"
"My dad is in the military so we moved around a lot but I think we are staying in Colorado for a bit." I smiled back at her.
"So you travel?" She asked finally sitting up so she wasn't leaning against her friend who was busy on her phone.
"Yeah I guess so. I mean I've lived in some cool places."
"Where was your favorite?"
"Well I had a ton of friends in North Carolina but it was fun in Germany when we got to stay at the camp for 15 months. I guess there was things about every place that I liked," I turned my head up to see her in awe, "So do you like traveling?"
"Yeah. A lot. Its really fun" She muttered quietly looking at her hands in her lap.
"It is, sometimes." I mumbled more to myself than her. After that she didn't reply, she just looked over her friend and out the window.
I wondered what she was thinking about. Our conversation? Maybe something personal? It wasn't my concern but she seemed distant, like she was in her own world. Withdrawn from reality. I wanted to just wrap my arms around her and hold her. Because maybe if I held her she wouldn't be so distant, feel so alone. Or maybe so I wouldn't feel so distant from her, feel so alone.
But I pushed the thought away. I just looked at Matty. He was messing with the screen in front of him. I watched him for a moment. But then put my head phones in my ears and laid my head back on the seat. Waiting for the plane to take off soon.
I listened to three songs before we finally took off. When we were finally in the air I took the pills in my pocket, knowing that they would make me fall asleep. I put my seat as far back as it would go, laid my head back on the headrest and glanced over at Camryn.
She was asleep. Her head was laying awkwardly on her shoulder closest to me. She wasn't moving at all. I wanted to check if she was alive but instead I just stared at her. Her eyelids were not fluttering. Her chest did not seem to take large breaths, but small even ones that you couldn't notice unless you were looking closely for her breath.
I could feel the pills start to take their effect on my body and make me drowsy. I closed my eyes. My head still turned toward Camryn. Before I fell asleep I took glance at her.
