Halston's POV
I am hopelessly in love with Jaden Hossler. And I think he loves me too.
Now, before you say 'awww, that's so cute', it's not. Were not dating. We are so hopelessly in love that we can't stand each other. We dated for a year, from August 2018 to August 2019. We bonded over our love for music (and hopes to have music careers) and other things. This was also around the time that we both started to gain a large TikTok following, so dealing with fame and the breakup was hard on both of us. Personally, it was the best and worst year of my life. When we broke things off, both of us were left pretty damaged, but we handled it in completely different ways.
I cried for weeks and never left my room. He pretended like nothing happened. I realized crying constantly was not the best for my mental health, so (not to brag but...) I took a major glow up. Jaden feel into really bad anxiety and start smoking weed, " recreational" drugs, drinking, and other various things to cope. No matter how good we looked on the outside, both of us were dying on the inside.
We agreed to stay friends, but everyone knew we were still in love. Jaden dated a really beautiful girl named Maddie, and it made me so jealous. I started too fall into the vicious trap of self comparison. Yet, no matter how good their relationship seemed on social media, it wasn't. Jaden couldn't give Maddie his heart because he had already given it to me. Cliche? Yeah. 100%.
We FaceTimed for hours on end just talking. That was the one thing about us. It was hard for Jaden to open up and trust people, yet he did it so easily with me. It was hard for me to articulate my feelings, yet I could do it so well with Jaden. Like that one time the Sway boys invited a hypnotist to come over and hypnotize Jaden. Although he'll never admit it to the guys, he hated it. That experience sent his anxiety through the roof. His words, not mine.
Maddie eventually found out about our three a.m. FaceTime calls and assumed he was cheating. They got into a big argument and that is the real reason why the spilt up.
Jaden and I have FaceTimed almost every night from that point on. Then, one time while we were on FaceTime, he popped the question.
"Halston, why do you think we broke up?" He took a hit from his blunt and blew the smoke at the camera.
"Jaden, you know how I feel about you smoking," I sighed, wrinkling my nose... okay, fine. I was partially avoiding the question. But I really was concerned about his health too.
"Sorry, it's just been a crazy week," he let out a loud sigh, running his free hand through his hair. "My anxiety was just of the walls and I needed to calm down."
I just stared at him through the screen, a sad expression on my face.
"Jaden..."
"Hey, you never answered the question?" he changed the subject, laughing. He does that a lot when he's high.
I sighed, knowing he wouldn't drop the subject, "I don't know, cause we fought a lot maybe?"
"Damn," he stared off into space."Yeah we did."
"Earth to Jaden," I waved my hand in front of the screen.
"Sorry," he refocused his attention to me. After a moment of silence, his expression turned serious and he said, "you know I'm not the same person I was back then, right?"
"Jaden," I sighed. Did I want to get back together with him? Hell yeah. But what's my reassurance that this won't just turn out like last time, we both lost a piece of ourselves when we broke up.
"I didn't know, Halston, I didn't know..." He shook his head. There were years in the corners on his eyes.
"What didn't you know Jaden?" I could feel my own eyes getting prickly. Jaden was always so strong, so when he got emotional, it made me more emotional.
"How to treat you right," he tangled his fingers through his hair again. "I wish I did. Maybe we'd still be together. I mean, is it not enough that two people want to be together?"
"I guess not," I blinked and there we heard running down my cheeks. "It just wasn't our time Jaden."
"You know, you keep saying that," he shook his head sadly. "Sometimes I think you don't..."
"I don't what Jaden? " I could feel myself getting angry. "Care about you? Huh? I don't spend hours on FaceTime with just anybody."
"Geez, why do you always escalate things, it's not even like that, " he played with his earlobe. He did that when he got angry or agitated.
We got into a really big fight that day. Jaden didn't speak to me after that. He ignored my calls and texts until I gave up. Did I really push his away this time? I couldn't help but think. My vibe was off for the next few weeks and everyone could tell.
Finally, Bryce reached out to me to tell me they were having a little get together to celebrate the dropping of Jaden's new song Angels & Demons. He wanted me to stop by and surprise Jaden. Even though I lived in the Bel-Air area, we hadn't seen each other in person because of Maddie. The last time we had seen each other was the day of the breakup, August of 2019.
Honestly, I don't think it was a good idea, but Bryce kept bothering me until I gave in. To my surprise, when Jaden saw me, he hugged me. The moment he wrapped his around my waist it was like all was forgotten. I clung to his neck.
"I can't believe your here," he smiled, pulling away.
"Why don't you answer your phone you jerk, " I jokingly shoved his shoulder.
"Sorry," he rubbed the back of his neck nervously.
"Forget it, all is forgiven. It's your big day! You're dropping your second single," I smiled. "I'm so proud of you."
I spent the whole night at his side, his arm around my waist. When the time to go home came, he walked me to my car and just as I was about to get in he said, "I've had something on my mind all night Hals."
"What?" I asked.
"I really wanna kiss you," he let out a short laugh.
"What are you waiting for? I'm only getting older here Hossler," I smiled and he grinned. Cupping my face with one hand and gripping my waist with the other, he brought me in close and placed a soft kiss on my lips.
After that, we texted a lot, but things got busy and we didn't FaceTime anymore. He told me he and the boys were taking a road trip and I told him to be safe.
RING! RING! RING!
An unknown number was calling me. I looked at the clock. 1:57 a.m.
"Hello?" I yawned.
"Hals..." It was Jaden, I could just tell. His voice was hoarse and obviously I could tell he had been crying.
I knew something was wrong almost immediately.
"Jaden? What's going on?"
"Halston," he whispered. "Something happened. Me and Bryce got arrested, and we're at a county jail in Texas."
