Jaden's POV

"He's not great, but he's a bit better than he was yesterday," Halston sighed, she sounded beyond tired.

"Hals, please get some sleep, you sound exhausted," I told her.

"I'll try," she mumbled and I heard her yawn over the phone. "I miss you."

"I miss you too," I responded, a small smile forming on my lips.

"How's LA? How's everyone?"

"LA's good. Kels threw a party and a bunch of people went and now their getting a lot of hate for it."

"Oh, I heard, Charli and Dixie were there right?"

"Yeah and Noah, Drew, the singer from the Chainsmokers, and his girlfriend the DJ, Noah, and others, I don't know," I sighed, "I didn't wanna go and now I'm glad I didn't. I really don't need that kind of hate right now."

"Ugh, yeah, I feel," she told me.

"I wanted to tell you something," I said, leaning back against the wall.

"Mm."

"I mean, well, what do you think about... us?"

"What do you mean?"

"Nah, you know what? Never mind, I'll just tell you when you come back," I decided, she doesn't need this right now, she's busy with her dad.

"Just tell me," she giggled

"Nope," I smiled, "you gotta wait until you come back."

"Ugh, now I'm gonna be thinking about it the whole time," she whined.

"Sorry babe," I said quietly.

"You suck."

"Why thank you," I smiled to myself.

Halston laughed. Wow it was so nice to hear her laugh again. Then I heard someone call Halston's name and she said, "coming. Jaden, I have to go."

"Say it again," I whispered.

"What?"

"My name, say it again, please," I closed my eyes.

"Jaden."

We stayed silent for a moment, she had been gone for almost a month and barely had any time for phone calls, so we both cherished these moments.

"I'll see you soon," she whispered.

"Bye Halston."

"Bye Jaden," she hung up. Immediately, I felt like a peice of me had left with Halston.

"It's been a long month," I murmured out loud to myself.

"You can say that again," someone said. I turned and saw Josh walking into my room. "I'm over corona, honestly."

"Agreed," I nodded and walked over to my gaming chair to sit down. Josh sat down on my bed and leaned against the bed frame.

"How's Halston?"

"She's okay," I told him, "honestly, I'm a bit worried about her."

Josh raised an eyebrow.

"She spends a lot of time at the hospital and barely gets any rest. Between you and me, she sounds exhausted, drained."

"I mean, yeah, she used to be really close with her father, right? I mean she talks about him all the time," Josh said.

"Yeah."

"Man, that's tough," Josh sighed.

"Yeah," I said again. After continuing to talk for a bit, Josh and I ended up playing video games for the rest of the night. Of course, however, Halston was always on my mind.

Halston's POV

"This is really good Mom," I hummed after finished a bite of her chicken pot pie. My mom was the best cook I knew, of course, it helped that she had her degree in culinary arts and owned/managed a restuarant.

"Of course it is, it's your favorite... it still is your favorite, right?" my mom asked, timidly.

"Yes Mama, of course it is," I mumbled, shoving another spoonful into my mouth. I hadn't been eating that well because I was practically living at the hospital.

"Hey Mama," my brother, Hayden, said when he came down the stairs. He had been up in his room napping.

"Hey Stone," my brother bent down and dropped a kiss on my hairline. Stone was his nickname for me because Hal-ston Ston=Stone. I don't know, we were young when he first started calling me that and it just stuck.

"Hey Hayden," I gave him a small smile, placing another spoonful into my mouth.

"All rested?" my Mom asked, handing him his plate of chicken pot pie.

"Yeah," Hayden nodded and took a seat, across from me, at the table. We ate in silence until Hayden looked up abrupty from his pot pie (that he had been staring at) and turned to our mother, "Mom, I'm so sorry."

Both my mother and I stared at him in surprise and shock.

"I'm sorry that it took this... situation to bring me back home," Hayden continued, his eyes wandering down to his clasped hands which rested on the table. "In all honesty, I've been dodging your calls and avoiding coming home because... I met a girl."

What the actual heck is going on here?

"And I've been too scared to tell you because I feel like if I tell you... it makes it more real. It means that I'm actually ready to move on from..." his voice trailed off.

"Macey," my mom finished his sentence.

Macey was Hayden's wife. They were high school sweethearts and all that jazz. He proposed to her at their high school graduation, and after some convincing of both our parents and hers, they set a date for the wedding. It was really beautiful and of course, everyone cried a lot. They were supposed to have a happy ending. Everything was supposed to work out.

It didn't. Macey went for a walk one evening after coming back from college but never came home. Four days later they found her body in a river near by. It was a robbery gone wrong. Upon the autopsy, I found out that I was supposed to be an aunt. Two lives cut short before they could even begin.

Hayden put his head in his hands and cried softly. My mother and I went around him hugged him. We stayed that way until all our tears had run out. We started talking about funny things we remember about Macey and ended up- two hours later- laughing our asses off.

"She was something special," my mom giggled while wiping away tears (because she had been laughing so hard) from her eyes. "So? Tell me about this girl you met. It's about time."

"Well, she's... she's amazing," he shook his head, a far away look in his eyes.

"What's her name?" I practically shouted out, both me and my mom were on the edge of our seats. Desperate for him to reveal more.

"Leah," he smiled, a light blush spreading across his cheeks.

"Oooo," my mom gushed. "Tell us more!"

"Are you sure you guys are okay with this?"

"Are you okay with this?" I asked in response, reaching out to place my hand over his.

"I think so," he nodded. "It kind of scares me, but I think I'm ready."

"That's good, Macey would have wanted you to move on and be happy," Mom added.

"Yeah," Hayden gave us a small smile.

"Okay so, if you're ready, tell us more!"

"Well," he scratched the back of his neck, "we met at...."

It was great to see my family smiling again in spite of the circumstances. I didn't even realize how much I missed them until we were all back together. Of course, the absence of my dad's presence was evident, but it made up depend on each other even more.
