Y/N muttered about Dabi under her breath as she stood up and shook the fur out of her pelt.
"You're just about as useless as a pup!" she snarled. "Haven't you ever been trained at hunting for at least a day in your life?!"
"You were the one who got up close to it when I was about to get it!"
"About to get it?! You were five feet off from 'about to get it'! You were supposed to wait where I left you. I was going to nip at it again to get it to run straight for you, and then stop, and then you were supossed to kill it!" Y/N growled, her fur standing up on end. Dabi snarled back, but the height difference between them didn't scare her off in the slightest.
"Alphas aren't supposed to be trained in anything but how to be an Alpha," he told her. "You were the one who was trained to become a Delta even though you were next in line to be Alpha of your Tribe."
"It wouldn't have mattered even if I still was becoming Alpha of my Tribe. Alphas need to learn how to hunt or protect like any other rank! An Alpha is supposed to be able to take care of their Tribe, not order the Tribe to take care of themselves."
Dabi growled again, but his pelt smoothed down. "Whatever. Let's just start making our way back. The ledge here goes nearly to the other territories in both directions, and even into one in one direction, so we'd best get going now. As it is we're going to have to sleep outdoors."
Y/N felt herself shiver at that, feeling uncomfortable at the thought of being unable to sleep in a den, surrounded by Tribemates. It wasn't as if she'd never done it before, but it never got easier no matter how much she did it.
Tribes were basically a wolf's lifeline. They were the most comforting, familiar thing, and anyone who didn't feel that way to a Tribe was lacking something in their heads.
Perhaps that was why she felt so strange about Dabi. He was perfectly fine with abandoning his Tribemates. Nobody normal was fine with that. Much less an Alpha.
She didn't have much time to dwell on the thought, as her nose caught the scent of deer. So glanced over to where it was coming from, seeing it not too far away, completely distracted, and upwind.
Slowly, she began stalking forwards, her tail completely still as to not disturb anything in her path. Normally, wolves didn't hunt deer alone, but considering the only help she had was more of a hindrance, she decided she'd have to do it by herself.
She lunged at the deer, managing to grip its throat in her jaw, and she clenched down, determined to not let it go. The buck tried his best to shake her off or stab her with his antlers, but all that did was exhaust him quicker.
The deer fell to the ground, and Dabi finally decided that it was clear enough for him to join her. As they began tearing into the stag, Dabi took a moment to breath.
"Its not everyday a wolf can take down a stag like this," he complimented. "It's probably a good thing you trained to become a Delta."
Y/N grunted in thanks as she swallowed another piece of meat, licking the blood from around her jaw. "Well, I have to be an impressive Delta if I want to convinced Endeavor to give me an underling come spring. Most wolves don't get an underling the first year they're in a new Tribe."
Dabi barked out a laugh. "It's not gonna matter," he said. "Old man's convinced that you're gonna be in the nursery den with my pups by spring." Noticing her ears pinning back in annoyance, he huffed and rolled his eyes. "Look, I'm not gonna force you. Endeavor'll probably be pressuring us, but I'm not going to force you to carry pups if you don't want to. I'm also not gonna force you to be my mate."
Y/N rolled her eyes, but relaxed a little bit. He seemed just as against the whole thing as she was.
But, she supposed he wasn't the worst wolf to be paired up with. At least he knew how to take care of himself, and he would likely be able to take care of a Tribe if he would just stay long enough to learn to lead them.
Dabi paused and sniffed the air, his fur standing up on end. Y/N sniffed around, too, and she immediately noticed the smell of Peltless, along with some other stench she didn't recognize or like.
Rogue wolves?
Dabi motioned for her to follow him, and he stalked towards where the smell was coming from.
After a minute or two of carefully walking around the Peltless, she finally caught sight of them.
The were the same ones she had been interacting with before.
She walked up to them, and immediately they all seemed to recognize her. A couple of them reached out, motioning with their strange paws for her to get closer. She finally did, and a couple of the Peltless began running their paws through her fur.
"What are you doing?!" Dabi growled.
"They're not harmful," she told him. She lifted her chin as they began scratching under it. "As long as you don't shift into your lwo-legged form, and don't make any threatening moves, they're perfectly fine."
One of the creatures began to coo at her, and reached into its bag. It pulled out a bone, which smelled amazing. Carefully, she took it, curiously biting down on it.
The Peltless began squeaking excitedly at her, and she had to put the bone down so that she could hold onto it with a paw. With a firm crunch, the shell of the bone cracked, revealing a meat she had never tasted before.
Dabi moved closer to her, leaving his covering of bushes and trees. The Peltless all paused, and watched as Dabi moved closer to Y/N.
"What is that?" Dabi asked, sniffing at it. He pulled back after a moment, and turned to leave despite the Peltless trying to convince him to get close to them. Dabi gave her a couple minutes to finish it while he walked around, still sniffing the air.
