Chapter 48: Carne village

"So…this is the village." 

I can't see much from here, just a very tall wall made of wooden logs. And a few guard towers. 

"Yep! You'll see it's way nicer beyond those walls!" 
The two tall and wide doors slide open, and the two of us are greeted by a blonde haired, brown eyed girl. 

She must be Enri, the chief. I think. 

"Lupusregina! It's so nice to see you!" The girl shouts, energetically waving her hand.

Well she's a happy one isn't she? 

The girl runs up to Lupusregina with an excited look and smiles widely. 

I can see she's a country girl. She's dressed like a farmer and her hands are full of calluses.

"Hello little Enri, long time no see." Lupusregina says and winks at her. 

So I was right, she is Enri Emmot. She's pretty, for sure, but not as much as Shalltear. She's been the only thing in my head these days, not surprisingly.
Lately the weather hasn't been very nice, but today is such a beautiful day...the sun is up, not a single cloud in the sky, a pleasing breeze and perfect temperature.

"Who's your friend?" Enri asks turning to me.

She still can't see my face, I have my cape on and the hood up. 

Lupusregina nudges me in the side, so I slowly take my hood off and reveal my face, my red eyes, and my fangs. 
"The name's Mark, I'm Lupusregina's friend and also a servant of King Ainz. And, well…a vampire." I say maybe too casually and give Enri a reassuring smile. 
"Don't worry Enri, he's a nice guy! He's not gonna hurt anybody, right kid?" Lupusregina says nudging me again. 
"Yeah, my intentions are nothing but friendly. I'm here to protect your village just like Lupusregina here." I say confirming what Lupusregina just declared. Enri nods and gives me a shy and small grin, but she still seems a bit scared of me. I don't blame her, really. It's not easy to not be scared of a vampire when you see one. I was fucking terrified the first time I saw Shalltear. 
"Please, come in. Make yourselves at home, I've got an urgent matter to sort out, but I'll be with you two as soon as I'm done!" 
Enri runs off, leaving me and Lupusregina standing there in front of the village's doors.
"Should we go?" 

I don't see why not.

Lupusregina takes me around the village a bit, introducing me to some of the people there, like the old mayor or the goblins' boss, or that weird guy with hair all over his face. 

I don't like him, he seems like a dumbass. And I'm probably right. I'm never wrong when it comes to first impressions. Well, almost never.

Time passes pretty quickly, so quickly that it's almost lunchtime and I don't notice. Right now we're laying on our backs, on some grass just outside the village on one of the hills surrounding it.
"I'm hungry…" Lupusregina whines at some point, toying with her scepter.
"Me too. Even if I'd need some blood, food is good enough." I say kinda annoyed. 
"But you know what? I can't really be bothered to get up from here…" She mutters, laying her scepter on the grass next to her. 
"Me neither…so your job is to just hang here and kill anyone stupid enough to pick a fight with you?" I ask, still feeling like this is more of a vacation.
"Exactly! It's the best job ever! And now that I have some good company I feel it's gonna get even better!" 

Her happiness is contagious, I can't help but smile!

"Same here. I think this is gonna be the beginning of a very good period of my life…" I think out loud and yawn really loudly. 
"I agree. You've got the friends, you've got the job, you've got the girl…you've got it all! By the way have you thought how you're going to like…ask her to be your fiance or something?" 

Uh…no. I don't really want a relationship...I mean, I don't want anything official.

"Nah. I don't want a relationship. And what I mean is…there's no need for it to be official or something. Love is love, it doesn't need any…rules, or officiality. I can just…love Shalltear without the "fiance" thing. I just…I love her and that's it. You can call her a bitch, you can call her my torturer, you can call her whatever you want, but she's the…woman I love." 
"Makes sense…by the way, thanks for yesterday. You made my day yesterday, kid! I'm glad I have a friend like you." 

That was so nice of her…it's these little things that make my days worth living. Everything else is mostly shit.

"Well, I'm glad I have a friend like you. You know…sometimes, I wish I could just…leave. I wish I could...break out, from the world. I wanted this a lot back when I was a human. But in the end, I only ended up crying out my pain at the wind, every night outside of E-Rantel. Luckily for me, I held my determination high." I think out loud and realize I digressed a bit from what we were saying.
"Weird…but understandable. Sometimes I want to disappear as well. And luckily I can!" 

Oh, right, she can become invisible. Heh, that's convenient. I wish I had that power. Maybe she can teach me...

"Lucky you. You need to teach me how to do that." 
"One day, Marky, one day…" 

Marky again...it's a bit weird, but also funny.

"Aha, sure. So…is there something interesting about you I should know about?" I ask, wanting to get to know her better.
"Hmm…let me think…nah, there's not much to be interested in about me. What about you? Is there anything interesting I should know about you?" 

Well that wasn't very fair…but alright. 

"Let me think…oh, I know. I…like drawing. I was, and I still am, very interested in monsters. I have a lot of dumb drawings back at my old home in E-Rantel." I explain, feeling a littl embarrassed.
"Huh, interesting indeed…by the way, why did you react so terrified yesterday when I told you about my dream?" 

Oh, fuck, the dream…I forgot. 

"I…Shalltear dreamed about it as well. And she said it was a premonitory dream." I explain feeling a bit uncomfortable.
"Wait, are you serious?" 
"Yeah…I'm still very confused as to-" 
"Fuck. This isn't good. Now 3 people have had the same dream." 

Wait, three? 

I sit up and take a terrified look at Lupusregina. 
"Th-three?" I stammer, hoping I just misheard.
"Yes. Well, no. The third one had a vision. So…Shalltear, me, and another person had the same dream." 
"Who's the third?" I ask impatiently. At that, Lupusregina takes a deep breath and she sits up as well, with a saddened look on her face.
"Lord Ainz."
