mini rant on police brutality and poc solidarity

So I made a youtube video about the current events that have happened this past week/this past couple of months. I am EXHAUSTED and I was at the breaking point, which is why I made this video. So you can stop reading and watch the video first, or you can read this post and then watch the video, whichever works for you.

OK

I know many of you may know what's going on right now in the United States, but if you don't here's a quick rundown. On Monday, May 25, 2020, George Floyd, 46 years old, was murdered by Minnesota police officer, Derek Chauvin. Chauvin was kneeling on Floyd's windpipe for about 7 minutes and during that time in a video (which will not be included) you can hear Floyd and other bystanders yelling "I can't breathe" and "he can't breathe." After the 7 minutes, he died and this sparked rage within the Black community.

The hashtag #Blacklivesmatter began to trend again, as it always does because it seems that almost every week there's a new person that was killed for just being Black and existing. Just a couple weeks back Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old EMT in Lousiville, Kentucky was MURDERED in her own home. The officer broke into her house and her boyfriend thought that someone was breaking into their home, so he got his gun and shot at the officer, which then the officer shot and killed Breonna. Her boyfriend was arrested. I noticed that Black women who are killed by white people/the police, they don't get as much media coverage. This just reinforces the idea that Black women are considered less than to others.

Back in February, Ahmaud Arbery, 25 years old, was jogging, as most people do, and was targeted by two white men who felt as though it was there duty to not only harass Ahmaud, but they also felt the need to shoot and kill him. One of the white men was SO cocky because he filmed the altercation himself. This murder went unknown to many people in the U.S. until early May when the video was released.

Also, many people have forgotten about Sean Reed, 21 years old, he was caught up in a high-speed chase in Indianapolis, and while on Instagram live he was murdered once he pulled over and got out of the car. His case hasn't gotten the same amount of coverage as the others, which I think is due to so many Black men and women are dying at rapid rates. He died on May 7, 2020.

I am honestly disgusted at the amount of innocent Black people that are dying at rapid rates, and the little to no care people on social media are showing. I'm mad at the police department that protects these crooked cops, I'm mad at the government officials that don't address these issues in their communities until they are put in the spotlight. I hate that the president of the united states called the protestors in Minnesota "thugs", but just a couple weeks ago he called the white people that carried automatic weapons to a state building "good people" because they were PRESSED to not wear a mask/want their haircut.

I'm mad that a lot of nonblack people are staying SILENT, but are quick to justify why they should be able to say the n-word, and why they can have a preference to only dating black people. Please go as hard for Black lives, as hard as you go for using the n-word. I'm mad that this will probably not be the end, I'm mad that when we peacefully protest we're teargassed, while white protestors can basically threaten government officials and police officers with guns, and get not type of tear gas/arrests.

I don't believe in POC solidarity anymore because its been too many times when things happen to any other community, Black people, especially Black women are at the forefront defending everyone, but its silence when it's Black people being dragged and killed.

If you want to be an ally, do more than just post #Blacklivesmatter on twitter or Instagram. Be the change you want to be. Sign a petition, donate, acknowledge the clear issue, don't just do the bare minimum. In my video, I go into further depth of what you can do to help support, so check out my video and I put links to the different articles and petitions you can sign in the description box under the video.
