I woke up to find Hazel curled up next to me in the single sleeping bag we grabbed. She looked peaceful and innocent as she slept. I tried to crawl out of the sleeping bag without waking her, but she rolled over and mumbled. She opened her eyes and smiled at me.
She grabbed my arm and pulled me back into the sleeping bag and curled up on me. I laughed and said that it was time to get up but she just moaned.
"But I'm so comfortable!" She protested, before crawling out of the sleeping bag with me.
She sighed. "Well, we can each eat a piece of dried fruit for breakfast. Then we should get some water, and try to purify it." She planned out.
"How?" I asked. Drinking water from the river was not safe. There was all kinds of bacteria and stuff in it.
"We will have to boil it, but we have to be careful about fire." I flinched at the word fire. She patted me on the arm.
Juno, or Hera decided to be a annoying git and make my life deepened on a small piece of fire. If it burned up, I would burn up. It was safely protected in a fire proof bag, that still aloud it to breath. I remember when it was put in a container that didn't let air in. I almost suffocated. I wonder if it being in a fire proof bag made me fire proof...
We ate a meal, if you could call it that, of a piece of dried fruit and stuffed our stuff back in the backpack. The cave was out in the open so we needed to find a better, more hidden one.
One night on the roof, all seven of us were together. Annabeth said that we could only pair up with a few people, and some people had to go solo. She had said that she and Percy should pair up, but only as friends. She said that me and Hazel would be a strange pair, but it was okay. she asked Reyna, Leo, Piper, and Jason tried to befriend a person from the future. She hinted that Thalia and Clarisse should try to join the careers. The rest, she told to go solo.
I was fairly glad that I got to work with Hazel. Nico was probably happy he didn't have to put up with anyone. I thought about Rachel dying. I hope what Annabeth had said was true-about people going back to the present if they died on the future.
"Hey! Frank!" Hazel hissed. "Someones coming!"
I heard two people, who seemed to think they were being quite, stomping threw the woods.
"Lets scale that tree." she whispered. "So we can see who they are and if they already have one of us with them."
We scaled the tree and sat hidden in the branches as Thalia leaned against our tree to rest. Hank frantically paced in a circle.
"Where could they be! Its like they are climbing the trees right above our heads! We see mild evidence of them and then they are gone!" Hank yelled. Little did he know we were in the tree right above his head.
Thalia looked up and caught a glimpse of Hazel and I. She just winked and stopped looking at us, as not to give away our location. Hank started kicking our tree.
"They were too powerful! They could possible kill us! And after that Hazel girl insulted us by refusing our offer!" Hazel, as Annabeth had instructed, refused to join the Careers.
"Well, atleast you have too new recruits, Clarisse, and me." Thalia said. She glanced at us again. the tree was shaking very hard.
Hank actually wasn't that weak. He was pretty strong. I grabbed her arms and helped her hold on. She smiled. Then my sweaty palms failed and she fell of the tree.
Right there is where I would have shape-shifted, but I doubted that would go down well with the people watching us. I scrambled down the tree and ran to her. Hank also ran to her. Thalia tried to discreetly trip Hank, but failed. She couldn't openly stop him, that would ruin our plan and such.
Me and Hank reached Hazel at the same time. A broken rib. Probably two broken ribs. She slipped out of Hanks grasp but Hank grabbed her again. I kicked Hank and he fell...into Hazel. Hazel shoved him off, but not before he stabbed her in the gut with a small, hidden, dagger. Hazel doubled over.
"She's going to die Frank! I stabbed her with a poisoned knife! Only me and my group have the cure!" He laughed. That monster. I reached for my bow and arrow-before realizing they were missing.
Thalia was trying to help without being obvious about her helping. She "tripped" and "accidentally" threw the knife in her hand, but only managed to nick his leg. Hank turned and saw she had fallen. He stepped on Hazel while running over to Thalia with a angry look on his face.
Hazel muffled a scream. I dashed over to her. Hank fell on the ground. A tree branch had fallen on his head. Thalia's look told me he was just knocked out and some particular person had encouraged the tree branch to fall. She dragged Hank away threw the trees.
"Frank" Hazel whispered.
"It's okay Hazel, I can figure out how to fix the wound. It's not that bad, if I can't fix it we will find someone who can." I assure her.
But, as I look at the wound, I see it is deep, probably hit something important, but not so important if it was stabbed, Hazel would die instantly. I wish Will were here. He would have known what to do. I tear a strip off of my shirt and rap it around her wound. I pick her up bridal style and stumble off into the woods.
