The rain came down, hitting my umbrella and making a soft noise. The 4 of us were walking to school in the lovely rain. There was barley anyone heading to school. There were some other kids, not very many though. The principal had wanted all the new kids to come to school earlier than usual. I decided to come with Cass, Teary, and Edward.
"I still can't believe what Kenly said yesterday" Teary spoke up.
"I know. A secret agent at our school? That's crazy. Do you guys really think she's telling the truth?"
"Might be." Cass shrugged.
"I guess there's no real way to tell if shes for real. I mean we can run her through a lie detector test, but that might be a little difficult and costly." They all turned to look at me strangely. "What? I've read a lot of mystery books." We turned back to the school.
"I don't think shes lying." Edward said as we stepped up the few stairs to the school. "Just a gut feeling." He shrugged.
"K, I'll see you guys after your assembly!"
"See ya."
I headed over to the library with my backpack over one shoulder. I felt so cool walking down that hallway. I stepped into the library and stopped, halfway through opening the door. I sighed and turned around, heading for the historic science classroom.
Yesterday, I had gym after lunch, then study hall. I helped Cass study for a test. I realized on my walk home, that I had left my pencil case in my historic science classroom.
I quickly snuck into the room, making sure no one was watching. I quickly grabbed my pencil case and was about to leave, when something caught my eyes in my desk. I picked up the folded piece of paper and opened it.
"Stay away from that little crush of yours" it read in newspaper letter clippings.
I glanced around to make sure no one was watching, or to see if anyone had just seen me trip over the corner of my desk...
Luckily, and unluckily, no one was watching. I got up from the floor and went back to the library. I sunk into a seat in the library, staring at the note.
What could it mean? Who sent it? Who are they talking about? Unless... How could someone have known? I barley even know myself. There's no way anyone could know I- The door to the library opened. I fumbled around with my things, trying to make it look like I was doing something.
"Oh hey Isaac" I said casually. I moved a strand of hair out of my face. I moved my elbow onto to table in an attempt to look casually.
"Hey Ava. What are you doing here so early?"
"I should be asking you the same thing."
"Well," he laughed a little. "I'm dropping off a book I borrowed from here." He pulled a book out of his messenger bag, or as I like to call it, his murse. "And you are...?"
"Oh yeah, I'm studying." I moved my arm so he could could see my textbook. "My friends had to go to an assembly this morning so I thought I'd tag along and study." I replaced my arm, resting my chin on the back of my hand.
"Ah, I see" he smiled a little and headed for the front desk.
I dropped my arm and sighed. I took the small time I had to try and make it look like it wasn't a mess.
"Well, I'll see you around" he said and left the library.
~~~~~
I tried to study. I swear I did. But that note was calling, no begging for me. I even tried to hide it from view. I gave up after... 7 minutes and 14 seconds.
I wasn't counting... Ok yeah I was. That's not the point though. The point is that I needed to figure out who had sent that note. I've watched and read my fair share of mystery books and movies. I started with a list of suspects and their motives:
Person: Reese Motive: Kevin
Person: Reese Motive: Teary
Person: Kenly Motive: ???
Person: ??? Motive: Cass
There must have been other people, but that's all I could come up with for the moment.
I had no idea how someone could have figured out that I liked Cass, but I had to look at all possibilities.
I focused on opportunity. When could the note have been placed? I was last in that room before lunch. I know that Isaac is the only one to use that class, so I'll have to ask to ask him if he had any other classes after lunch.
Could it have been placed there last night? I mean I guess so, but that means that anyone could have put it there really...
"Ava. Earth to Ava!" A hand was waving in front of my face. I shook my head to wake myself up. I was in one of my classes, math I think.
"Did you hear anything I asked?"Teary was sitting next to me and staring at me.
"Uh no, sorry" I gave him a little aquward smile.
As if if it was listening to our conversation and knew just when I needed help, the bell rang.
~~~
Everyone stood up, frantic to grab their stuff and get out of the building.When it's Friday and the final class has ended, students will run down the hallway like the schools on fire, causing a stampede that then causes an earthquake.
I rushed to pick up my stuff and out of the classroom, leave Teary in my dust.
I was a woman on a mission.
A mission no one could stop, not even satin himself.Well, Reese is close enough to satin, she'll do.
Down the hallway I ran, my hair swiftly moving behind me.
I made it to my locker and quickly grabbed everything I needed, stuffing it in my backpack and slamming my locker shut.
"Sorry, gotta go!" I called to Cass.
I scanned the hallway, my eyes in full lookout mode. I knew just what I was looking for.
Now just to find it...
...
..."Mr. Kanish!"
