I opened the door just enough so my head can show while I hid the rest of my body behind the door. My eyes were met with the white walls of the vacant hallway. I did not know whether to feel relieved or worried. Maybe they went to notify the other Alphas or security of their suspicions. I quickly shut the door with renewed anxiety. I picked up the blood-filled towel and ran to the window, throwing it out. I instantly cringed at what a bad idea that was.
"What am I doing?" I whispered to myself, hands gripping my tousled hair.
I can't run and nor can I hide- So I did the unthinkable.
I screamed at the top of my lungs. Bursting through the door dramatically as I stumbled out into the open. I banged on the doors of the other Alphas and dragged my body against the hallway walls streaking it with dulled color before collapsing. Soon I was met by Alphas and aids all staring with differentiating looks of boredom, amusement, curiosity, and worry. They eyed my torn clothes and peaked down the hall analyzing everything. With tears in my eyes I screamed...
"He's dead! Someone killed..." My voice was cut short by my sobs. I felt the frantic running of the men into the hallway running to alert the others and the light footsteps of aids coming to pick me up. I didn't cry because he died, I cried because I feared I was next. As I was brought into the kitchen and given a glass of water to drink with gentle rubs on my back, I only had one thought- Did they buy it?
Alpha John and Aidan came bursting through the kitchen doors. I was met with the fierce gaze of my Alpha... My father. "Who did this?" he asked.
"I don't know. He wore a cloak of all black. It all happened so fast. I couldn't see his face." My voice trembled as I spoke the bitter lies. He wordlessly turned around allowing me to finally breathe.
Aidan stooped down in front of me and held my hand. He has the same big brown eyes as me. If he knew the truth, he could save me. Without my permission, a tear rolled down my eye.
"It will be okay. Go rest now. You're safe. We have the Alphas searching the premises now." My heart skipped a beat. As he walked away all I could think about was what would happen to me when they found the bloody towel. They would know.
I slept under my bed that whole night. Between staring at the door waiting for guards to burst through to throw me in the cells and the tormenting flashbacks of Darius' face, I'm surprised I even got an hour of sleep. Guilt weighed heavily on me, but I had to do something or...
Time passed until I lost track of it. It was then that I heard three knocks at the door. Once again, those slow, heavy, and convicting knocks have found me. My strained eyes darted the doorknob as it twists to reveal the one person I needed to see. "Ava?" her sweet voice called out.
"Mrs. Gretta". She walked into the room with a chuckle and said "You know I'm too old to stoop down there to talk to you right? If I go down, I won't come back up." After moments of silence she sighed. "I'm sorry you went through all that. I heard everything. You have the day off." I stayed quiet. I have lied to everyone about what really happened, but I couldn't lie to her too. She began to hum the same lullaby she used to sing to me as a little girl. Everything in me began to relax as my eyes drifted shut.
Not realizing when I fell asleep, I could feel my stomach cry out for bread and butter. The morning sunlight shot through my cracked windows causing me to sweat. I had no idea what to do about last night's events, but I did know that I had to climb out from under this bed and face the day. Just as I decided to pull myself up from under the bed, I felt someone sit right above me on my wonky mattress.
My hands covered my mouth to stop any noise from coming out. I slowly turned my head to see big black boots slightly covered in dirt. The scent of Spiced cologne with hints of the forest filled my tiny bedroom as I wondered how I didn't hear or smell him earlier. Suddenly something drops to the floor right in between his large feet.
The blood-stained towel. It is crisp and dry, demanding justice.
"Are you going to get out from under the bed or do you want me to drag you out?" he breathed.
His deep voice sent waves of fear down my spine, yet I remained still. He abruptly lifted the bed and violently threw it against the wall shattering it into pieces. My eyes drifted up his black fitted jeans through his black shirt showing off his muscled frame up to his piercing eyes. One eye a deep pool of coffee and the other a chilling sapphire color. Tattoos riddled his arms leading up to his neck and then disappeared before they could touch that sharp jaw of his.
"My apologies. Let's start all over, I'll play nice this time. I'm sure you know who I am already so, you will be my aid during my stay here since you killed the guy you were assigned to. So, I suggest you stand up, wipe the drool off your face, and start talking. You've got some explaining to do." He began pacing around me as he watched me connect the dots in my mind.
Alpha Adonis.
