(third person pov)
"You said you weren't going to get pink!" Ethan sighed.
"This isn't pink!"
"Yes, it is, Ethan!" He'd already opened the can of paint- no returning it now. "Oh my gosh, everything's ruined."
"Scarlette- this is coral."
"Code word for pink!" She crossed her arms and huffed at him. "So?"
"So what?"
"Are you gonna return it?"
"Scarlette-"
"Grandma!" She ran out of the room and Ethan groaned, closing the paint can back up. "Grandma, he got- pink!"
Lisa walked into the room, tying her hair up.
"Yeah, well, I bought this house, Scarlette, so I think it's only fair if I get to pick the colour of my walls."
"Your walls!" Ethan held back a smile as he stood up. "This is my room, E, you promised!"
"I know, I know." She looked up at him and he smiled. "I'll go get you green- maybe we'll use this one for the nursery," Ethan said.
"The nursery!" Scarlette giggled. "Do you think the baby'll like it?"
"Oh yeah, it's a very pretty colour, sweetheart," Lisa told her. Scarlette grinned. "Where's e/w?" She asked.
"Napping," Ethan said with a smile. "Alright shortstuff, you wanna come pick out your colour this time?" The nine-year-old nodded and clapped.
"Um- E, before you go-" Lisa paused to watch Scarlette pick open the lid of the paint again. "Hey, Scar, why don't you go put your shoes on, honey?" Scarlette nodded, gagging at the colour.
"'Kay, grandma!" She ran out of the room. Ethan looked back at his mom. "E- you coming?" Scarlette asked.
"Needa have a word with Grandma- gimme a sec." Ethan turned back. "What's up, 'ma?"
"The- you know, the facility Gray was at?" Ethan's face fell. "Well- they called me."
"You're still the contact?"
"Who else was going to be?" Ethan sighed, rubbing his temples. "They're being let out." Ethan's eyes widened.
"Already?" Lisa nodded. "He's done- he can't possibly be don-"
"It's been 3 years, E." Ethan's face fell. "They still have to get counselling and stuff, but its- yeah, he's out now." Ethan nodded, hands in his pockets.
"Well, good for him." Lisa stared at him for a moment.
"He wants to see her." Ethan stared back at her.
"Oh fuck no, has he lost his mind?" Lisa pursed her lips. "You really can't want him to see her, mom."
"Ethan-"
"No, no, this isn't gonna happen, we're not doing this-"
"Ethan, she's his daughter." Ethan played with his keys in his pockets.
"He didn't treat her like she was, did she?" Lisa stayed quiet. "Imagine what would've happened to her if I didn't like find her- like mom, do you realize how fucking insane that is?"
"I know, E, but-"
"It's not happening."
---
"All done!" Scarlette looked around the room, a smile on her face. "See- pink would've sucked."
"Coral," Ethan corrected, putting his brush down. "Happy now?" She nodded, clapping. She ran over to him and hugged his leg.
