My heart ached and my stomach sank as the realization that this was going to be my life manage to sink in. Sitting and rotting away at a desk as mundane task begin to define my being. A tall balding man opened the door greeting everyone in the vicinity with a waft of coffee breathe mixed with a pack of cigarettes. The light did nothing to help the mans appearance, he seemed to be drowning in the cold light of the office space, his skin old and dry withering away after years of neglect. His head snapped towards me as the door slammed shut, his dull eyes barley meeting mine as the frame of his glasses blocked his view. Boredom and a sense of never ending dread filled the room as he motioned for me with a grunt and a dismissive hand movement. I raised my head, straightened my back and made my way forth like a soldier meeting face to face with their commanding leader. His hunched back and swift feet were all I was able to see as we squeezed through a hallway that was most definitely a fire hazard overlooked, or completely ignored. Dale was his name he had a wife and kids and judging by the heavy bags under his eyes he was overwhelmed both at work and home. He pointed to my cubical, gestured to the break room and with few words to spare he told me, " This is your office, you will eat, work, cry and if you're lucky enough you'll die here as well." He huffed as the sentence ended glancing away only to turn back and look me dead in the eyes, "Whatever you do don't bother me or anybody if you have questions ask the red head over there her names Gina. Also make sure to wear a longer skirt next time, nothing above the knee." I glanced down at the burgundy skirt my sister sent me, it stretched over my thighs almost completely covering it leaving barely a half inch above my knee exposed. By the time I opened my mouth and looked up Dale was down the hallway turning the corner. I stood back sighing a heavy breath as I glanced around nothing to see nothing but rows of cheap plastic used to barricade off each cubical. Sitting down I began to do the office work I applied for taking breaks every so often to explore the office and stretch my crammed legs. I walked over to Gina's space to have a quick chat with her, "Hi, Gina right?" Her red hair moved briskly as she snapped around to great me with striking green eyes. "Yes!" She exclaimed as she stood in a hurry, shaking my hand. "Wow, you must be Jamie, never had an Asian come into these parts." I eyed her warily, "Oh honey no offense meant it as a good thing, we could use some more diversity!" We both let out a soft chuckle and continued to chat about the rudeness of Dale and the stiffness that seemed to permanently linger throughout our body. After the day ended I said my goodbyes to Gina and headed home, walking though the parking garage at night gave off a sense of eeriness I couldn't seem to shake. I got in my car grabbed a bite to eat then headed home.
