All men are not created equal.

I learned that when I turned five years old. I didn't want to believe it, but I learned the hard way of what it means to be at the bottom. To be the weakest link in this chain we call society.

In this world, you either have power, or you're considered quirkless.

That’s what I am. Quirkless.

My parents are already low on the chain, they don’t have very powerful quirks and don’t have a lot of money. But when I didn’t get a quirk, it got worse. Especially in school.

Kids found out and started off just teasing me, then as we grew older they got more physical. Beating me up when I tried to fight back, degrading me when I expressed I wanted to be a hero.

But, I didn’t let that stop me. I worked hard to get to my dream.

To be a hero.

I have to prove to everyone that I can be a hero. To show that anyone can be a hero if they put the effort.

I just wish I knew just how hard my journey would be.

“Come on, Doll. Has your nose stopped bleeding now?” Mom asks, grabbing my hand as she walks me away from the school.

“Y-Yeah...“ I whimper, using my free hand to wipe my tears and nose. Though tears immediately come back as I stumble behind her. She doesn’t stop walking as we go to our car. She helps me inside and starts the car, taking us away from the school playground.

I hear her sigh, “Doll. You gotta stop fighting back. You’re only making it worse for yourself.”

“But… It’s wrong. They shouldn’t bully people… that isn’t heroic,” I say back with a frown.

“Doll, you don’t have any way to protect yourself. I don’t like seeing you hurt just because some kids are beating up another. You need to think about yourself first.”

“B-But…”

She sighs again, “come on. Dad is waiting for us at the mall. Just focus on getting some rest before we get there.”

I frown again, leaning back against my seat as I look out the window at the passing buildings and streets. When we get to the mall, Mom helps me out and takes my hand again. We walk towards the mall and enter, I look around at the shops and other people there, as Mom pulls me towards the food court. Saying Dad is there for lunch with us.

“There he is, geez, couldn’t he have chosen an easier spot to see?” Mom says under her breath. It was odd how I could hear it so well.

She walks us over to Dad, he greets us. Kissing Mom then he picks me up and sets me on his shoulders.

“Hey sweetheart! How was the park? You have fun with your friends?” He asks.

Mom scoffs, “she wound up getting beat up again. Group of kids were picking on some girl and Doll stepped in.”

Dad hums, patting my legs, “you gotta stop doing that, kiddo. One of these days you’re gonna wind up too hurt to get back up.”

I frown, “I’ll always get back up! That’s what a hero does! They fight no matter what they’re up against!”

I couldn’t miss the disappointed look Mom gives me as she turns to look at the food options around us.

“Just be careful, kiddo. Now, what do you want to eat?”

Dad turns around, letting me get a look of the places around us. I see a familiar red and white restaurant and point to it.

“That one! That one!” I bounce on his shoulders excitedly.

He chuckles, patting my knee before turning back to Mom. But she wasn’t in sight.

“Mom…?” I look around.

“Mingan? Did she go get her food already?” Dad question.

My eyes scan the cafeteria, vision seeming to get sharper as I spot her white hair.

“Daddy! Over there!” I point in the direction making him look over. He spots her and hums.

“Ah, nice eyes, kiddo. Alright we’ll wait for her to get her food then we can get yours.”

He takes me off his shoulders and sets me in a chair beside him, then hands me his phone with a game on. I smile and take the device, focusing on the game as Dad taps on the table.

We waited for a good ten minutes before I got bored of the game and gave the phone back. I look around to see Mom walking back when a ringing takes over my ears right as an explosion happens.

Dad jumps to his feet as screams erupt, I look up worriedly, “Daddy?”

“Sweetheart, run to the exit. Follow the crowd. I’m going to go get Mommy,” he ushers me back before taking off towards Mom.

I watch fearfully, eyes wide as more explosions take place. Then, a large monster looking villain enters the cafeteria. I cry out as people run past me, knocking me to the ground as I watch, frozen in shock.

Screams pierce the air, washing another wave of fear over me as I look towards the cause of the scream.

The villain has two people in its grasp. I spot Mom and Dad through the rushing crowd, standing and holding each other as they face the villain. My heartbeat pounds in my ears and chest and before I knew it. I push myself up and start running towards them.

“Mommy! Daddy!” I yell, “Run!”

I managed to get to them, grabbing their wrists before turning and pulling them towards where the rest of the crowd was going. But just as they got knocked to their senses and just before I could run with them. I’m grabbed from behind, a scream ripping through my throat as I see my parent’s backs getting smaller.

They turn with wide eyes, “Doll!”

Before I can think, another explosion happens. Parts of the ceiling and nearby pillars crash to the ground and dust kicks up.

“Mommy! Daddy!” I scream, feeling the grip around my torso loosen. I gasp and pry the hand open, falling to the ground. I grunt and push myself up to look around. My vision is getting blurry, probably from the dust, but there’s a sharp pain in my eyes that makes it hard to keep them open.

Ringing has taken over my ears, muffled explosions and screams are nearly deaf to me. I look to my left to see a man under a pile of concrete, unmoving. I gasp and push myself away as a pool of blood forms beneath him.

“Wh-where are…” Tears prick my eyes as I back up against a wall, “where are the heroes?”

I scream as the wall behind me explodes, I turn and feel something hit my face before I fall onto my back. I groan, rubbing the back of my head. My eyes crack open and I gasp. All around me are flames, my eyes land on the man I saw before, his body engulfed and turning black as his skin burns.

I feel something start to come up my throat as I turn away to see fires all around me, leaving no escape. My throat starts to feel sore and painful with every breath. My head goes light and I fall back onto the ground.

“H… help…” I whimper before it all fades away.
