Here, we upload our staff-approved activities every Wednesday, so get ready for some social distancing fun, from our families to yours! Without further ado, let's get to this week's activity.

This week we are: Making homemade ice cream!

Summer has begun, and chances are it's hot as h*ck outside. What better way to beat the heat than by making your own ice cream? Or lounging by the pool, but that's not the point. Let's make some ice cream!

Here's what you need:

- 2 cups whole milk
- 1/2 cup granulated (white) sugar
-1 tablespoon vanilla extract
-10 cups ice
-8 tablespoons rock salt or kosher salt

To make it Chocolate

-1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder

To make it Mint Chocolate Chip:

- 1 tablespoon semi-sweet chocolate chips
-1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract

To make it Strawberry

- 1 or 2 tablespoons (depending on how strawberry-ish you want it) of finely chopped strawberries. About 2-3 large strawberries.

This is a pretty simple recipe. In fact, there's only three steps! Let's get into it, shall we?

Step 1: For the base ice cream: Stir the milk, sugar and vanilla together in a medium bowl. Pour 1/2 cup of the mixture into a sandwich-size resealable plastic bag. The base will make vanilla ice cream, or add in your desired flavors to make mint chocolate chip, chocolate, or strawberry ice cream. Tightly seal the bag. We don't want it to leak.
Put that bag into another sandwich-size resealable plastic bag and tightly seal. Repeat with the remaining batter in a separate bag and desired flavors.

Step 2: Place the ice and the salt into a 4-quart food storage container with a lid or a gallon freezer bag. Put the filled bags into the container and secure the lid.

Step 3: Now comes the fun part. Shake the bag/container until the mixture is frozen and resembles ice cream, about 5-10 minutes depending on the consistency you want. Remove the bags with the ice cream in it from the outer bag and snip a large piece off one corner of each bag. Pipe the ice cream into small bowls, top with whatever you want, and eat! Enjoy the frozen fruits of your labor!

Ugh, now I'm jealous. I want ice cream, but you know what might make me feel better? Send me a picture of your delicious diy! I would love to see the result of your hard work, and so would our other readers! Do this craft, take a picture, and send it to us for a chance to be featured in next week's chapter of Quarantine Quenchers!

Well, I hope you had fun. Thanks for reading, and we'll see you next week!
