What a night.

How could things have gone so wrong?  Natsuki wondered to herself as she sat sobbing on the side of the road. She had tried to be sweet. kind, romantic even, and their relationship had gone up in flames. Now all Natsuki had left were the ashes, the broken pieces left from her wonderful times with Yuri.

She quickly wiped her tears away when she heard footsteps approaching. Standing up angrily, she scowled at Sayori, who stopped in front of her with a worried expression on her face.

"Natsuki?" Sayori said, sounding surprised and confused.

Natsuki's face flushed. Of course the most bubbly, cheerful person I know finds me on one of the worst nights of my life. "W-what are you doing here?" Natsuki demanded loudly.

"I was taking a walk," Sayori responded. Her eyes searched Natsuki's face, and Natsuki turned away, biting her lip. "Why are you crying?"

This made Natsuki start crying again. Sayori started to walk over to her and comfort her, but Natsuki abruptly turned away and sprinted as far as she could. Despite her short legs, she was actually extremely fast from all the times she'd had to run away from her father before he could hit her. She thought she heard Sayori's footsteps behind her for a minute or so, but soon enough Natsuki was alone again.

Completely and utterly alone.

An outburst of manic sobs rose in Natsuki's throat, and she sat down once again, this time right in the middle of the road, not even bothering to move to the sidewalk. She just let herself cry, her eyes closed.

Which is why she didn't see the car coming.

Natsuki was in a bright, beautiful wonderland. The ground felt like clouds beneath her feet. She giggled as she watched a few colorful butterflies flutter past her. The sky was a light pink fading into yellow, and Natsuki beamed as she watched it. The sun was warm and cheerful, and Natsuki happily closed her eyes, enjoying it.

Somebody tapped her on the shoulder. Natsuki turned around to see familiar violet eyes staring right at her. Yuri grinned and held her hand out, and Natsuki took it. They began dancing together to sugar-sweet music, and as Natsuki was whirled around by Yuri, she thought, This is true happiness.

Until the sky seemed to be torn apart and the ground gave way beneath her. Natuki was falling and screaming for help, but no one could hear her, because Yuri had vanished. Natsuki looked up and saw her sitting on a cloud with Monika, both of them laughing and talking.

"Why are you crying?" Sayori's voice rang through the air, taunting her. "Natsuki, talk to me!"

Then her father's voice. "You don't have anywhere to run to! Nobody cares about you! You're just an annoying, ungrateful, stubborn little BRAT!"

She woke up in a cold sweat, gasping. She hadn't had a nightmare like that since the time her father nearly starved her to death a year ago. Natsuki shuddered. Suddenly, she realized she wasn't in Monika's house, or Papa's. She was in a white room filled with trays and tables and strange medical supplies. Frowning, she tried to sit up, but she felt an unbearable pain in the back of her head, Groaning softly, she lay back down.

What happened . . . ? she wondered.

Then, she remembered.

Her, crying in the middle of the road.

The sound of a car emerging behind her.

And then the impact of it bursting into her body.

She'd tried to stand up and get away when she heard the car coming, but it was too late. Natsuki had been hit.
