F I F T E E N: I just need a little bit of a buzz

"Why do I even have to help you setting up this stupid party?" I asked James as I placed a box with some extremely heavy stuff inside it on the ground.

"Well", he started, "You are coming too, and Randy didn't have enough people to help him set up, so we decided to force you to help."

I sighed, wiping my palms on my ripped skinny jeans, "I don't know why I gave in. I don't even like Randy."

"Why are you going to his party then?"

"Maybe because, I don't know, Rachel and all the other people I know are gonna go too", I said sarcastically.

"Jeez, no need to snap at me", James rolled her eyes.

"Brooklynn!" Someone yelled. I decided to ignore it, since it was probably Randy, and I didn't want him to boss me around at the moment.

"Aren't you going to see what he wants?" Jamie wondered.

I shook my head, "I'm not gonna do whatever he wants me to do. He can just do it himself."

He chuckled, "That were a lot of do's."

"I kn-"

"Brooklynn!" Randy's annoying voice interrupted me again.

"Oh get a heart attack!" I replied, causing him to storm towards where Jamie and had been standing for a while already.

"Do you want me to get you on the list of people that are forbidden to come inside my house during the party?" He threatened.

I rolled my eyes at him and shrugged, "I'll just climb through the window or put on a mask or something."

"Would you please just help me hang up the lights in the garden?" Randy said, sighing.

"Whatever", I followed him outside, "I'll just sacrifice my poor weak body, so you can have your party. See how nice I actually am?"

"Oh my, now I'm really starting to have empathy for you", Randy said, placing his hand on his chest, "Now hurry up and come help me."

I picked a string with fairy lights out of the box and hung them on a tree branch. "Why would people even go outside with this weather?" I wondered.

"To see the fireworks? Or to have a private place to make out or something? I don't know, but there are always people that are outside during the party."

"I don't think they're gonna admire the fairy lights, though, so why make an effort to hang them up?" I asked, already getting my fifth string out of the box.

"This way", Randy explained, "there's a bit more light, so a smaller chance that people will ruin my mum's plants."

"Ah, so you're doing this because you love your mother so much", I concluded with an eye roll.

"And there we have the sarcasm again. You know Brooke, sometimes I wonder why we can't stand each other, but I can never find out."

"We're too alike", I said, "And that annoys us. I mean, I love to be sarcastic around people, but I just think it's annoying when you do it. We kinda have the same personalities, and in our case, they clash."

Randy huffed, "How do you even know that?"

"I'm observant", I said while I hung the last string of fairy lights on the fence, "And done with this. Good luck with setting up the rest of your party, but I'm out of here. See you tonight."

"I'm going home", I told Jamie when I'd walked towards him.

"Okay, bye", he replied, not really paying attention to me.
