"we have a new student with us today." the teacher spoke out. i looked up with curiosity as did everyone else, we didn't get new students like other schools did. so when someone new did come, we were excited to see what our new classmate would be like.

"please welcome satsuki. make her feel welcomed!" the teacher beamed, allowing a girl to step in front of her with a smile. "hello!" satsuki spoke out, causing everyone to gasp out and give greetings back.

instead of giving a greeting, i stared at the girl and examined her. i hoped i didn't look creepy. i searched her face for any sort of emotion, like if she didn't want to be here. the good ones always left in the matter of a few weeks. i saw nothing but pure happiness and excitement.

her body language said it too, so i just shrugged off and went back to doing my math problems. " ( name ) , i hope you don't mind satsuki sitting next to you. you're the only one with an empty seat." i tensed up, but shook my head. "no, i don't mind."

soon, she came and sat next to me, making herself at home. i didn't say anything to her, didn't try to. her time was being consumed by the other students who were gathering around her. the teacher saw this and hummed, clasping her hands together loudly. "it seems the excitement of a new student joining us has you guys sidetracked, let's start free time early, yeah?"

everyone cheered and another girl helped satsuki up and began leading her out the door with the other people following. i stayed in my seat, frowning at the sight. i wasn't someone who was up front about things, instead i stayed in the back feeling bad about the fact i wasted chances i clearly had. i didn't have much confidence to talk to anyone, thus my lack of friends.

"hm, ( name ) ? come on, everyone else left already." the teacher called from the door. i looked out the window and saw everyone running around, most people messing with satsuki. "ma'am, i'm already behind on my grades so i was wondering if i could stay and do some sort of extra credit?"

"i don't see why not." she went to her desk and looked through some stacks of paper before pulling a few out. handing them to me, she smiled and headed back for the door. "you can turned them in with your original math assignment at the end of the day, okay?"

i nodded, beginning to work when i was called once more. "listen, try to talk to satsuki please? you're the only one not out there with her, or with any student as it is." i looked at her with an appreciative look, giving her a thumbs up. "yes ma'am."

she was nice, looking out for me like that, but right now i wanted to focus on my studies. that wasn't a complete lie, but i would be lying if i said i didn't want to be out there smiling with everyone else. there were only a few hours left until it was time to go home, i could make it.

"i can't walk with satsuki." a voice piped up. i didn't mind it, not thinking it was for me. everyone was busy trying to file outside of class, getting their last conversations in with their friends before they would have to wait another few hours to see them tomorrow.

"hey, can you hear me?" i felt a poking at my shoulder so i turned around, seeing one of the more popular girls in class. i raised an eyebrow, not understanding what she meant. "turns out satsuki heads the same way you do going home and i don't, i need to be home asap so can you please go for me?"

"why me?" i asked. "because she was asking about you during free time earlier. if you haven't noticed she's been trying to talk to you and get your attention all day." i laughed, shoving my books into my bag and putting it over my shoulders as i stood. the girl gave me a look and sighed.

she motioned to the door and i looked over, seeing satsuki peeping our way. "see? now go on, i have family events to attend tonight and i don't want to spend the time i should be using to get ready arguing with you." she left after those words, giving satsuki a hug before walking out completely.

i sighed and pushed some hair from my face, walking over to the door and brushing past the awaiting girl. she didn't follow, she had this worried look on her face. i hummed and motioned for her to come along which she did with no hesitation.

"hey, i'm sure you already know but i'm satsuki!" i nodded. "and you are?" "she didn't tell you my name? she said you were asking about me all day, and the teacher must've said my name lots of times today." i heard a nervous laugh before she took a deep breath.

"alright. i can see you don't like small talk. i'm just trying to start a conversation." i laughed, holding my hand up to keep the sun from blinding me as we walked off of school grounds. "yeah, small talk isn't my kind of thing. i more prefer deep talks, or funny ones. anything but small talk." i explained.

she nodded at my words, skipping ahead a few times just to wait until i caught up. "so, you're new huh? has kanta caused you any trouble?" satsuki frowned. "he's a bit annoying.. just always being rude but i'm not gonna lie and say i don't be a bit rude back." i snorted, covering my mouth as i did so.

"yeah, that's kanta. a weird bugger but he's cool once you get to know him." after that, we started talking more and more as we walked along. for a walk that usually took a while it seemed time passed by so quickly.

"this is my stop! thanks for walking with me, ( nickname ) ." i couldn't believe in the short time we talked she already had a nickname for me. this girl was something else. i looked up, seeing a huge tree casting shadows onto the ground below. "it's nice, from the looks. that tree was always a wonder to me."

"hey! why don't you come and meet my sister and my dad? my mom is in the hospital right now, but you can meet her when she gets out! if you like the tree so much, the leaves are in our backyard so you can see them up close!" she sounded so enthusiastic.

i smiled, shaking my head. "i can't today. i need to be home at a certain time. let me ask my mother today and we can try again tomorrow. if not, the weekend is just a day or two away." i said and satsuki nodded back at me. she waved goodbye as she ran up the tree lined walkway.

i couldn't help but smile to myself thinking that for the first time in a while, i gained myself quite the friend. one i'm sure wouldn't be leaving anytime soon.
