let's  look at Erysichthon. Erysichthon was a man that was  incredibly greedy and incredibly rich (things that don't mix well), and he didn't care for  the gods much.

One day he cut down a sacred grove of trees, in order to build another feast hall, this was Erysichthon first mistake.

Demeter, the goddess of the harvest, was annoyed by this, and wanted/decided to punish him. She gave him an appetite so strong that he ate everything he could.

He ate all the food he had, then all the food he could buy, until he had completely ran out of money and faded from his wealth.

He got so desperate he tried to sell his own daughter for food. This reduced him to such poverty that he lost all standing and his home.

When he had nothing else to eat, he turned on himself and started eating his own flesh off his own body. Until he was more.
