Open House

Junior year has been speeding by since I stepped inside the halls of Marina high school during the third week of August. Maybe it's because I'm being more productive or the fact I have a boyfriend who cares about me. Whatever it is school seems more simple and the people like Unna and Navia don't matter as much. Especially Navia since she's in a neck brace and doesn't even have the ability to turn and look at me. Or turn and look at Harper who has been indulging in all the non vegan snacks she missed out on when she was with Navia. Right now she's scraping the cup of almond coffee cake as I sit in the middle of the patio going over french notes. Ziyah would be joining us, but he's trying slowly to truly reconcile with Lucas.  We're in the center of the patio, which a year ago would've scared of me, but now it seems like I have inherited Vince's spot. So much so anytime I see JJ he quivers with a bit of fear and settles for the lunch table right under the onning where all birds seem to shit.

"God this stuff is amazing," Harper says and still tries to find more crumbs in her square cup.

"Est fini Harper," I say brushing some of her crumbs off of my textbook.

"Whatever, do you still have any of your bars in your locker?"

I shake my head. "No, Dani ate all of those after school, she has p.e. 6th period." The middle school ends before the high school so she's always waiting at the front for me begging for something to eat which lead me to getting  a box of chewy bars. It's also lowkey a way for me to check her attitude, and make her say thank you.

Harper throws her cup away and turns around. She's trying to hide it, but I know she's looking at Navia's table. She can lie all she wants and say she doesn't miss Navia because of her attempt to break me and Ziyah up, but I know when she's not stuffing her face she's thinking about her.

"She spends nutrition at the nurses's office," I say. Harper whips her head around and the top of her tube top threatens to slip down.

"I wasn't looking at her, I was looking .." Just as expected Harper stumbles over her words and tries to find girls she could've been looking at who aren't Navia's friends. However she does find something to pull out of her ass. "I was looking at the open house flyer, because I have to tell my mom to be on her A game tonight."

"Open house is next week." I don't even look up at Harper and rewrite some of the notes I did in class, at some part of Madame's lecture I was having a good time in space and writing chicken scratch. I should get credit though for trying to stay awake and not just plopping my head on my desk like Harper sometimes.

"Uhh no, it's tonight," Harper says. "I know because I'm making my open house muffins after school."

Maybe all that sugar is giving Harper brain fog, because open house is definitely next week on a day where my dad can actually show up. "It's next week."

Harper shakes her head and opens her phone. She shows me the screen that has nothing to do with what we're talking about, and instead is a google search. I squint my eyes and read what's in the search bar out loud. "Can your vagina go into withdrawl?" Harper quickly flips the phone back to her and scrolls for a bit until she lands on something that I hope is not her vagina withdrawal findings. She puts it in my face again, and this time I don't have to read anything to see the online poster about open house and how it's tonight from 6:30 to 8. Shit.

I guess because I'm not in school with Vince I sort of forget to check the school website and not just rely on the fact that someone will tell my dad who doesn't know how to check his emails. I honestly think he might've forgot about most of the school events as he doesn't have his star quarterback to motivate him to remember them. Now he's engulfed in all of Vince's college's life.
