I had a knot in my stomach all throughout school. If I knew Autumn, and I do, she was going to show that video to everyone at school, and I would be in for it. I was hoping, was I hoping, that Arista was going to take care of everything. Soon after lunch, the principal announced that everyone file into the auditorium for the assembly. I couldn't stop shaking, I was actually terrified. "Everything will be alright", I hear Arista whisper. Doubtful. We pass an empty room. "Go inside there", Arista says. When I make sure that no one is watching, I slip into the empty room. "Arista comes out of my body. "What is it?", I ask. "It's time to put the plan in action", Arista says. "Just make the wish. Quick. There isn't much time."
I hold my breath. Then I say it.
"Arista, I wish for the video of you and me on Autumn's phone was deleted forever, and replaced with another one."
Then Arista disappears. I play with my hair nervously. This better work.
In the auditorium.....
I walk through the doors of the auditorium. I decide to get a seat all the way in the back, so if my plan doesn't work, I can escape quickly. But I felt a hand grab my arm. I turned. It was Autumn. "Hey there", she said, grinning. I swallowed. "Hi", I said. "Last chance Arielle. All you have to do is agree to my demands, and I'll call off this whole thing", she said. Don't do it, I thought. Stick to your guns.
"No", I said. "As I said before, it's not worth it." Autumn's lips tightened. "In that case", she says, dragging me all the way to the front. "I want you to have a front-row seat to witness the magic." And she plops me in a chair that's literally in the front row. Oh, Arista where are you?
Then I hear a voice inside my head. "Hey." It's Arista. Since I'm surrounded by people, I take out my phone and pretend I'm talking to someone on it. "Hey", I say. "Did you do it?" "Yeah, I did it", Arista says. "I just went inside Autumn's phone and moved the video to permanent trash and replaced it with another one I found. Easiest thing in the world." I sighed with relief. "Oh good, what did you replace it with?" Arista laughs. "You'll see. All I can say is, this is going to be a very interesting assembly."
Then Mr. Breitbart took the stand. "Good afternoon students", he began. And then the assembly went on. I tried my best to pay attention, but I was more concerned about what was going to happen at the end of the assembly than what was happening now.
The assembly droned on and on, and it was making me more and more nervous. I have anxiety, but not as bad as this. I need to calm down.
Soon Mr. Breitbart and a few other members of the staff finished speaking. "Now, if there is anything else any students would like to add-", Mr. Breitbart starts.
"Actually, there is", Autumn says loudly. I gulped. Oh boy, here it goes. "Autumn, what is this about?", Mr. Breitbart. Autumn smiles. "You'll see, Daddy. You'll see." She steps up to the microphone on the stand. "Hello fellow students", Autumn said. "As you know, Arielle McCormick has been a bit of a big deal around here with no explanation. Well, I found an explanation." Mr. Brietbart came closer to Autumn. "Autumn, what are you doing?", asked. "Hush Daddy, I know what I'm doing", Autumn said. She turned back to the audience. "As I was saying, I found an explanation for Arielle's sudden popularity. And that is.....a ghost!"
The audience was silent for a while. Then everyone started laughing. "It's true!", Autumn said. "Arielle has a wish-granting ghost, and she used it to make me like.....this!!!" The students continued laughing and pointing. The members of the staff look at each other, concerned. I hear Arista say "humph" inside of me. "I am not an 'it'", I hear her say. As nervous as I was, I had to giggle. Mr. Breitbart grabs Autumn off the podium. "Autumn Katarina Breitbart, you stop this at once!", Mr. Breitbart says. "You're embarrassing me!" Autumn yanks herself away from her father. "Everybody shut the fuck up!", Autumn screams into the microphone. Everybody was then so quiet, you could hear a pin drop.
