I couldn't sleep.
I was too troubled now that I knew the truth.
I got up. I needed to sneak out. I couldn't leave my family alone with Arista any longer than I already have. I got out of my sleeping bag and changed out of my pajamas. I frantically but quietly changed my clothes and packed my things. I was just about to escape when-
"Arielle?"
I turned around.
Heidi was standing behind me, rubbing her eyes. She squints, staring at me. "What are you doing?", she asks me. Then she looks at the bags in my hands. "Are you leaving?", she asks me. I frantically try to think of a good excuse. But I can't. I sigh. "Yes Heidi, I am. My family is in trouble. I can't really explain, but I need to go save them." Heidi stared at me, and she seemed to understand. She nods. "Go ahead, save your family", she says. I nod at her gratefully. "Thank you", I say, and leave her house and get in my car. I drove fast to my house. I went in our parking lot and went in my house quickly and quietly. I locked the door and tiptoed in the quiet darkness to my room. I creaked the door open.....
I looked around.....
I turned on the light and dimmed it, so my mom wouldn't know I was here. I looked around. "Arista!", I whispered loudly. "Arista, I know you're here!" I looked in the magic mirror. I sighed. The more I stared at my reflection, the more I regretted getting myself in this situation. Then I heard a monotone voice behind me that I knew all too well.
"What are you doing here?"
I whirled around. Arista's bright pink dress was now a black minidress, and her hair wasn't red anymore. It was black, and in two ponytails. "Arista?", I say in utter shock. "That's my name", Arista said, lighting a cigarette and walking in a slow circle around me. When she got close enough, I could see that she had black lipstick and heavy eyeliner around her eyes. "What are you doing home so early?", she asks. "I thought sleepovers lasted all night." I narrowed my eyes at her. "Something, an instinct, told me to come home early", I say. Arista blew a perfect smoke ring. "And what would that be?", she said. "Oh, cut the crap Arista!", I say. "I know! I know everything!"
Arista rolls her eyes and settles on a chair, cross-legged. "What are you babbling about Arielle?", she asks sarcastically. "I know you lied to me! You lied about everything!", I say. Arista chokes on her cigarette smoke. "Excuse me?", she asks. I step closer to her. "I know that you lied about why you really grant wishes to people", I tell her. "I know that you are so consumed with revenge on your boyfriend, you took it out on your previous masters. You took control of their bodies, killed them, and took over their lives, and then killed their families! I know all about that and more, Arista Haskell!"
Arista looks down at her feet and sighs. Then she stands slowly and smiles. "Congratulations", she says. "You found me out. You're a smart, smart girl." I shook my head. "Why Arista?", I say. "Why would you do this to me? Why would you do this to other people? Why???"
"Why?!", Arista repeats harshly. "Because my life was perfect until my boyfriend took it all away from me", she says, walking slowly to me. "He not only killed me, he killed all my hopes and dreams, my reasons to live. Ever since then, I wanted justice for what he had done. And I'm going to get it."
