I think I can safely say the rest of my day was the worst. Everywhere I walked, students who saw the events go down that morning would whisper, giggle, and look at my skirt. They didn't say anything 'cause they saw it was fixed. Autumn especially looked annoyed when she saw that I had fixed my skirt. She gave me occasional dirty looks, while I gave her death glares. I was just itching for school to be over so I could get my revenge. It couldn't come soon enough. Eventually, the final period bell rang, so I grabbed my books and raced out of the school to my car without making eye contact with anyone. I threw my books in the backseat and opened the driver's seat. I was about to go in when someone snatched my arm. I jumped, but it was only Angel. "Oh, hi Angel", I said, trying not to blush, and smoothing back my hair.
"Hey, I just wanted to apologize for today."
"Apologize? For what?"
"For Autumn. I told her to leave you alone, and she still keeps bothering you." He shakes his head.
"You don't have to apologize for Autumn. You're not responsible for her actions, she is. Besides, you only feel that way because Autumn acts like she owns you."
He then ponders this. "Yeah, she does act like she owns me, doesn't she?" I don't say anything. I just sway from side to side. "Well, I didn't want to say anything, but I noticed it." He sighs. "Yeah, Autumn's just really possessive. I should have figured that out when she doesn't let a pretty girl come within a few feet of me." He laughs. "I guess that's why she hates on you", he said softly. I tried to hide my smile. Angel thinks I'm pretty? "Yeah", I quietly agreed. "Besides, it looks like you fixed it, good as new." Angel reaches over and touches the spot of my skirt where it had gotten ripped. He strokes the fabric and his fingers are grazing against my thigh, which sends jolts of electricity down my leg. And I had to hold my breath to keep from hyperventilating. Angel Gonzalez is touching my bare leg. God. Eventually he let go. "Well, I won't keep you", he said. "Have a safe trip home", he says, and he walks away. I watch him go, and that's when I knew what my second wish would be.
I drove home and slammed the front door behind me. Mom and Judy weren't home. Good. The last thing I needed to see them right now. But I could see Svetlana sweeping the kitchen. She looks up and smiles. "Hello, Arielle. How was school?" I shrugged. "It could've gone better", I replied. "Where is everyone else?", I asked. "Oh they're all working in some other parts of the house", she said. "Are you hungry?" I shook my head. "No Svet. Maybe later." I head up the stairs to my room.
I close the door behind me and lock it. I go over to the mirror, looked inside and said, "Arista." My refection morphed into her face and she floated out of the mirror. "Hi", she says. "So, how was school? Did you show Autumn who's boss?" She looks at me with hope in her eyes. But as I tell her what happened, the hope dies. "Oh, Arielle I'm sorry", she says. "It's not your fault. That Autumn is just devious!" I nod. "I know, but I've got a plan." She leans forward. "Keep talking", she says, looking interested. "With your help, I'm going to get Angel to be my boyfriend", I said. "When that happens, a chip of Autumn's pride and confidence will be ruined. Thus, her popularity status will crash a little when people find out she lost the captain of the football team to someone unpopular; me. And my popularity will soar once me and Angel are going out. So I'll make my wish, me and Angel will be in cahoots, and Autumn will be the one crying in the girls locker room." I finish telling Arista my plan with a gleam in my eye.
"Oh that's genius!", Arista says, clapping her hands. Then she stopped. "Are you sure you're only doing this because you have a big crush on Angel and really want to be in a relationship with him?", she says, giving me a sly smile. I looked down and smiled goofily. "Maybe", I say. "I do really like him, and I know he likes me. I mean, he's the only one who's ever really been nice to me, and the way he acts around me.....we just have this....connection." She holds up her hand. "Say no more", she declares, and flies in the middle of the room. "Just say the magic words." I get off my bed and blurt them out with no hesitation.
