Lee's POV
As I'm in the back room of the café playing Playdead's INSIDE, Marnie calls out to me from the front counter. I run my hands through my purple hair and tie the work apron around my waist. A beautiful dark skinned woman comes into view.
"This young lady wants to know who's inside this picture." Marnie slides the picture to me. When I look to it, I see May.
"Oh are you looking to hire May?" I ask the woman in front of me. When she opens her mouth to speak, I look to the window and see May being held by her hair by a man. The woman looks behind her and back to me.
"You okay, kid?" Is what she says before a gunshot goes off. I push Marnie to the ground then run into the back. When I open the door I see May holding the side of her head.
"God damnit, May. Get in here!" I pull her into the back and lock the door behind me. I grab the first aid kit and clean the cut on the side of her head. I tie her black hair into a ponytail then get down to her level. "Are you okay?" I ask her in Korean. She nods to me and I sigh in relief. Marnie walks into the back after kicking everyone out and sits next to May.
"You okay, baby? I didn't see what happened but Lee pushed me down so quickly that I thought it had to be something." Her soft and slight southern accent voice visibly calms May and I. I look to Marnie and smile and place my hand on her leg to let her know we are fine.
The thing about Marnie is that she's blind. She became blind three years after she found May and I in the streets during a winter night. May was nine while I was seven.
When Marnie walked up to us all those years ago, she looked much younger. Her face was full of youth, her hair was a dark brown. She still looks the same she did eleven years ago but her black skin became a bit paler, her hair is a bit gray and she can't see. She's been our only family we've had since our father shipped us away to god knows were. I don't understand why he even came back.
"What did dad tell you?" I ask. May looks to me with uncertainty. "Come on!"
"He said that he'd be back for you. I was hoping that the guy in the suit would kill him but he didn't. Dad ran away before the bullet could hit you." When May tells me this, tears automatically fell from my eyes. My father and I never had the best relationship. When he discovered I was a boy, he despised me. He'd throw anything in close proximity at me; bottles, knifes, a bat.
"You're supposed to be a girl!" He says when ever I walk into the room. When I was six, my fathers one night stand, Crystal, put me in one of her crop tops and I never felt more beautiful. I went to go show my father but he slapped me and told me to take it off. It's like whenever I was a boy he hated me and when I was dressed up in feminine clothes he hated me even more.
Know that I'm 18 and openly gay, I guess he's grown angrier and it doesn't help that I wear crop tops, pastel colors and on occasion make up. I never thought that I'd have to go through this again.
"Lee, I will protect the both of you with my life. If he wants you, he has to get through me." Marnie confids in us. I sit on the other side of the couch and next to Marnie so that May and I can both hug her at the same time. Marnie kisses the both of us on the forehead before telling us to help her cook dinner up stairs in the main house. Our place isn't too big but it's homey. It's basically a three bedroom, two bathroom apartment. Since all of us are three, we all get our own rooms. Although, I can't ever sleep alone so I'm always sleeping with May or Marnie. If I'm alone at night, I have panic attacks in my sleep. Resulting in me waking up screaming. I have a stuffed bunny with me at all times of the night and sometimes during the day but my bunny isn't enough.
When we get up stairs and make dinner, May and I teach Marnie how to use chopsticks. It's hard considering she is blind but she caught on very quickly. Dinners here have always been therapeutic for me so of course I had fun.
When we finish dinner, I got to take out all the trash. As I'm bringing out the the last of the garbage a mans deep voice calls out.
"Hey!" He shouts. I look to the side and squeak like a mouse before hauling ass back into the cafe. It wasn't until then I realize the same woman from earlier was with him. I hid behind the counter and watch him as Marnie try's to get ride of him. His face is chiseled and has scruff on his chin and upper lip. He looks to be strong and well kept. He's as gorgeous as a god. The door shuts in his face and I breathe.
"Who was that man, Lee? Is he your boyfriend?" She asks.
"No ma'am. I have no idea who he is." I walk to where May is and look out of the cafe window like she is. As I watch as they drive away, I remember that that lady was looking for May. "Oh my god. Come on, Marnie. I'm kind of tired." I grab her hand and lead her up the stairs. She walks into her room and I grab May's wrist and run into her room.
"Lee, what's wrong?"
"That girl we saw get into the car just now, she came to the cafe looking for you. Did you do something bad?" I ask her. She shakes her head no then shrugs.
"Not that I can think of. I did kill those men though. The men that work with dad." She replies.
"Just be careful okay? She doesn't seem to be very kind."
