Amina's POV

TEN YEARS AGO

"Thanks for doing this for us, Deb. We really appreciate it. Don't we, Amina?" my mom asked, that early morning in September as we stood on the Young's front porch.

"Oh, it's no problem, Jackie. We love having Amina over. She's always such an angel," she said with a smile as my mom handed her my overnight bag.

"Warren will be over to pick her up after he gets off work, tomorrow afternoon. If you need anything, just give him a call at the hospital."

"We shouldn't have any problems," she said as she smiled down at me. "Are you hungry?" she asked, receiving a shy nod from me.

"Lunch is just about ready. Can you go to the backyard and let Colson--"

She barely finished his name before I sprinted through the house towards the backyard.

"Colson!" I yelled after sliding the patio door shut behind me.

He was kneeling in the grass with his back toward me. When he didn't turn or answer me, I stormed over to him, upset that he was ignoring me.

"Cols?! Didn't you hear me?!" I stopped once I was behind. As I peeked over his shoulder, I saw what had him so distracted.

A tiny bird was cradled in his hands as he finally looked up at me, tears pouring out of his stormy grey eyes.

"What happened?" I asked, kneeling next to him, my legs tickled by the grass.

"I think she fell out of her nest," he said as I looked up to see an empty nest in the large tree in the Young's backyard.

"Let's bring her inside and show your mom," I said, standing up.

Colson sniffled a bit as he nodded and rose to his feet, following me into the house.

"You kids ready for some corn dogs?" she asked, turning from her spot by the counter. Her eyes fell to Colson's hands cupping the injured bird. "Oh, no. What happened?" she asked.

After explaining to Colson's mom what happened, we helped her set up a shoebox for the bird to recuperate in.

"Once her wing is healed we can set her free," she said once we were seated at the table for lunch, and from the corner of my eye, I could see Colson sit up in his chair.

"Can't I keep her?" he asked his mom, who simply shook her head.

"No can do, Kiddo. She's a wild animal, not a house pet," she said gently.

"But--"

"She'll still be around kiddo, her home is in the tree in the backyard, remember?"

Colson nodded as he twirled his corn dog in the mustard on his plate.

A moment later, the question he had been wondering for a few months now finally came out of his mouth.

"Well, then can I... get a dog?" he asked, his grey eyes beaming with hope as his mother looked at him with a gentle smile.

PRESENT DAY

"Colson, what the hell?!" I asked the moment he stepped into the kitchen.

"Doggie!" Cayden screamed excitedly, flailing his arms and legs from his seat in his highchair.

"That's right, little man. Daddy got you a puppy," Colson said as he held the small puppy in front of Cayden, letting the dog sniff and lick his face.

"Colson..." I began, a serious tone in my voice.

Ever since that day at the park with Ashton and his dog, Colson had been obsessed with finding the right dog for Cayden.

Although I understood and remembered how disappointed he was when he didn't get his dog as a kid, I knew I'd be the one taking care of the puppy.

"I thought we were gonna wait until he was older, honey..." I said sweetly, masking the annoyance I was feeling at that moment.

Cayden didn't need to see Mommy ripping Daddy a new asshole.

"Yeah, but come on, babe," he said as he looked down at the pug, gently grabbing his front paw.

"Look at his face

"Look at his face. How was I supposed to say no?" he asked and as I leaned in, the puppy began wagging its tail, trying to leap over to me.

"Whoa!" I said, grabbing the puppy from Colson. "Excited little thing, aren't you?" I asked, raising the dog up to my eye level, watching it pant as its big eyes focused on me.

"You are cute though," I commented before I looked up at Colson whose hopeful expression matched our son's.

"He's gonna need a bed... and some food," I said after a short pause.

"Wait, seriously?! We're keeping him?" he asked, excitedly.

"We're keeping," I confirmed, causing Colson to pull me in for a kiss, nearly squishing the puppy.

"Baby! Be careful," I said, smiling at his giddy reaction.

"I'm sorry, I just... we got a dog, buddy!" he said, turning his attention to Cayden, before scooping him out of his highchair.

He tossed him in the air gently, before setting him on the ground. As I set the puppy on the floor, he ran up to Cayden, running around and between his legs, before Cayden reached down to pet him.

"He's gonna need stuff, babe," I nodded towards the puppy.

Colson smiled and shoved his hands in his front pockets, confidently rocking back and forth.

"It's all in my truck, Mamas."
