We were sitting in the car in silence, I didn't know where our destination was but I decided to let my instinct move the car to wherever we'd go.
"You can keep that portrait, you know?" I said simply, trying to Break the ice.
At first, she didn't reply, she was staring at the houses along the road.
"What portrait?" She turned her gaze at me.
"Ahh! Women are very weird."
"No, it's just you" carelessly, she said. I smiled at her reply.
"What's your story, Abby?" I asked her.
"Well..I don't want to talk -tonight -about anything."
"Okay"
Silence was taking its place again.
"Abby?"
"Yeah?"
"Put your seatbelt on." And so she did.
"What are you going to do?" She asked, smile taking over her beautiful face. She was trying to read my mind.
"We are in a highway street now and not many cars are found, so?"
"So?"
"Are you ready to be crazy tonight?"
"Not sure!"
"Then Hold on tight, Abby!"
I pushed my foot on the accelerator as the car started to obey me and accelerate the speed.
She wasn't scared at all instead she rolled the window down, letting the wind move her short messy hair in every way, I pushed the button to roll mine down as well.
I wanted to keep looking at her the whole time but I needed to focus on the road or we would be killed.
Not gonna lie, I was terrified of the speed but hell to all the rules tonight. "Let's shout together, okay?" She shouted energetically so I'd be able to hear her, I nodded, smiling. "On my count, one, two, three" and we were shouting our lungs off. Afterwards we smiled and laughed like no other time at all.
I checked my rearview mirror, slowly removing my foot from the accelerator, returning to more suitable speed for what I was about to do. And hell yeah! it was my first to do such a crazy shit.
"Hold on tight this time, Abby" I was shouting so she could hear me. She nodded, seemed to figure out what I had in mind and still the smile on her face.
My heart was beating so fast that I could hear it echoing in my ears now.
I pulled on the handbrake with the tires squeaking on the ground, the car formed a torque, rotating almost 180 degrees.
than I returned to the stable state, trying to calm my beating heart and the fire in my chest as sweat covered every inch of my body afterwards.
"Are you okay?" I asked, trying to pull myself together but weirdly, she was laughing and happiest like no other time. Her smile was something to look for every time.
"I am great!!! Truly! I've never felt so much adrenaline inside me like this right now."
"What do you wanna do right now?"
"It will sound weird."
"I'm listening.."
"Just follow my lead, okay?"
"Okay."
She asked me to stop the car and so I did, we were in random parking lot cross from the beach. She was out of the car in no time, taking her way to the free dark sea, removing her boots and playing a familiar song on her phone.
Young gun worried that you're moving too fast
Deep down knowing, it was never gonna lost
Didn't knew it
She left her jacket as well, beside her boots on the sand, "you're not cold?"
She didn't reply, just smiled, swaying and singing with the song.
Never forget your first time, first time
Watchin' her heart break
"I wanna fly tonight. That's why I'm not cold."
I didn't know how but I wanted to keep up with her weird thoughts and words and everything that was related to her by any meaning.
Cold air was breaking my ribs but I couldn't care less. She threw me a smile before running away from me in freedom, opening her arms for the cold air, the sea on her left side.
maybe it was the only cure for her broken heart as much as I needed to heal mine the same way.
I started to run behind her without giving much of a thought after taking off my shoes.
Her laughs were intermittent, the songs were shifting on her phone.
After a while she stopped running to look at the sea in front, her chest moving up and down. I started to feel the heat in my body due to the running. I took off my jacket and held it in my hand. She said while soft music was playing in the background, "I always wanted to run on the beach at night, maybe I wanted to break my fear of the dark and the unknown."
I said nothing to that, only looking at her semi dark face. I wanted to draw her right now, the moon above her, the sea beside her, and her short messy -in a perfect way- hair enlightening the picture, her happy face. She looked perfect in every imperfect way!
I tried to memorize this picture to draw it later.
"Do you fear the sea?" I asked her.
She shrugged her shoulders, still we didn't feel the cold air around us from all the running.
"I don't know. Sometimes I feel like I can trust the sea and sometimes I don't know why she becomes so loud and noisy and may drown my café!"
I sat on the sand beneath me, leaving my bare feet for the sea to play with. Still my jacket was beside me.
She followed my moves with her gaze
I'll be a better man today
I'll be good, I'll be good
And I'll love the world like I should
She sat down beside me, letting a sigh go, laying and resting her head on the sand.
She was closer than usual and the wind was waving her smell everywhere. she smelled like a good combination of mint and flowers.
"Why did you follow me to the café earlier?! I mean why when all you wanted was to be alone?" She said, trying to understand.
"Your clothes were darker than usual, your expressions had a hint of sadness even though you are good at covering your emotions, you didn't wear your unique earrings, I knew you were sad."
"So?!! You came back because I was sad? It doesn't make sense to me."
I said nothing in return.
"You know by the time we're back, we'll be sick."
"Here, take my jacket."
"Okay."
"But hey!"she punched me softly on the shoulder after wearing my jacket, "we've got to have a night where we are free and breaking all the rules."
"Yeah!! And I really hope you are better now."
Looking at my phone, it was getting late, "it's 12:30, already" I said.
"I didn't feel the time passing."
"Neither did I" we both stared and smiled at each other.
I started to stand up though my muscles were as rough as wood, "hey, give me your hand" I said, trying to fetch her hand in order for her to stand up but we both fell down and this time, we felt cold water against us.
We fell in the sea in December where the water was frozen, we were very smart!
We laughed at our stupidity and the fact that we would be sick tomorrow (or today no difference)
"We should get back to the car right now." I said, through my hysterical laughters and my fail attempts to get up from water.
We finally were able to stand up and started to shiver, "I'm sorry for your jacket!" She couldn't help herself but laugh and so I laughed.
"No worries."
Our way back to the car was both hard because we were soaked up with water against the painful cold wind and interesting.
"So tell me random stuff about you." She said, shivering through her words.
"I like to draw."
"I know that"
"Right! mmm.. I love listening to Dean Lewis if you know him."
"Are you kidding me?!"
"What?"
" I love listening to him too, I think we are the only two people who listen to him."
"Wow! Nice."
"Let me guess your age." She said, narrowing her eyes, "28 No! 29"
"I'm 26"
"So close."
I laughed.
"What can you do, Abby?"
"Be more specific in your question, Sam!"
"Do you have a talent?"
"Yes. I can sing"
"Seriously? Nice, can u sing something now?!" I tried to keep myself from shivering.
"I would, but I'm freezing to death and we were shouting earlier too so.."
"Sing anything, it doesn't have to be right and perfect. I just wanna hear ya."
"Okay."
"Sth for dean Lewis?"
"Sure."
She started to sing:
How am I supposed to love you whenThrough her singing, she closed her eyes and that's when I started to roam in her face like I was trying to remember every small detail of it
I don't love who I am and how can I give you all of me when I'm only half a man
cause I'm sinking ship that's burning. Her voice was angelic, beautiful and soft like no other. When she opened her eyes, I smiled, gratefully, "just wow!"
She was shivering harder now, I tried to keep her warm but I was useless myself.
"We need to get back to the car!" I said.
"I agree"
We started to move faster till we reached the parking lot, taking our things that were on the sand first.
When we were in the car, she said,
"Friends?"
"Friends."
I was on my way back to her café.
