Chapter 02: Rencontre

'~'

The moon shone brightly in the sky tonight. As light seeped through the opened blinds and chill acoustic music filled the room softly, a girl's silhouette could be seen. Moving her body lightly to the beat of the music, she took a sip.

In her left hand, she was holding her tall black mug. It was filled up with chamomile tea, which was said to be good for sleep. Her mobile phone was on her other hand.

Time had passed. Jade had already taken a long hot bath and was now in her silk pyjamas, in her room. She made her way to her vanity table and replaced the items in her hands with beauty products. As she did her night skincare routine, she recalled the competition that happened earlier on.

It was as clear as day that Conrad would win the race. He was trained and expected to be the best runner out of the three, out of the whole household actually. But his brotherly instinct got the best of him and he wanted Jade to win.

Silly Rad...

Jade smiled subconsciously when the image of Conrad tripping Dominic appeared on her mind. The betrayed look on Dominic's face was priceless. He demanded a fair rematch, with no dirty tricks.

Speaking of Conrad and Dominic, she realised she had not heard from them for a while now. Looking at her beauty products located in front of her, she thought of an excuse to disturb them.

Maybe they want a facial?

She picked out three facial masks and dialled her brother's number, only to be told that the user was unreachable. She stared at her phone as if it did something wrong.

Okay... I'll call Dom then.

She stood up from her seat and made her way to the windows, lightheartedly, to shut her blinds. With her phone on her left ear, she peeked outside.

There, by the poolside table, the guys were talking seriously. Both of them had a drink in their hands. Jade squinted her eyes to make out what they were drinking. Beer for Conrad and soda for Dominic.

Drinking session without me? I don't think so.

Jade stretched her arms and snapped a picture with her phone. She then shut her blinds and pocketed the three face masks. Grabbing her mug of hot chamomile tea, she hummed her way out of her room.

"Sorry baby girl, I just saw my missed call," Dominic waved his phone in the air the moment he saw a small build inching closer.

Conrad kicked Dominic lightly with his foot. He did not like the sound of his sister being called pet names. Although he knew it was just his best friend's bad habit and he did not mean any harm.

"Hey, I feel a little dumb for bringing these here," she fanned them with one hand, displaying the three different scented face masks. "Cause I just realised the air out here is probably dirty. And I'm not even sure when was the last time you washed your face."

Jade thoughtlessly emptied her pockets and sat by the pool. She slowly lowered her feet into the cold pool water, her toes retreating once and twice before her calves submerged. The boys exchanged eye contact and shrugged.

"Rad, you might want to stop drinking. We still have school tomorrow," Jade raised her arms up and leaned back slightly, not facing the boys.

"Is my sister being the concerned one now?" Conrad smirked as he lifted his can up to his lips. It was true that his favourite beverage was beer, but he also knew how much he could handle.
