Chapter 10: Dérouter
'~'
Ever since last Friday, the day which Sapphire had an encounter with the Robinson's household, she had started jotting down notes. She wasn't obsessed nor was she a crazy stalker. It was just this tempting voice in her head.
Sapphire zoned out in her class as the teacher's voice went in from one ear and out from the other. The clock on the wall was ticking slowly. The noise around her was muffled. Just then, everyone started to stand up from their respective seats. Many of them were stretching their backs after sitting down for a long period of time.
Still dazed, Sapphire unintentionally turned back to look at the trio whom she had been dying to talk to. She wanted answers. The fact that no one had approached her until now made her frustrated on the inside. Though, the three of them did look as dead as she did.
Maybe they're just as confused as what to do.
Sapphire packed her things and exited the class from the front door. Yes, she was avoiding them even though she was desperately wanting their explanation for that night. She felt that she was in no position to ask for clarification from the three, or specifically from Conrad.
If I were in his shoes, I wouldn't know how to explain to my classmate why my family's covered in blood either. Heck, I hope I'd never get into those shoes. That'd suck.
But aren't you curious about what's going on with his family?
Yes, but if it's a family secret, wouldn't they want me to keep quiet about it? I mean, even I wouldn't want that kind of secret out of hand. So, eventually one of them would approach me by themselves, wouldn't they?
Sapphire pursed her lips as she trudged down the hallway. Being the one with the upper hand, this meant she wouldn't have to personally spend energy chasing after them first. Furthermore, even if she wanted to, she wouldn't know how to bring this topic up to him. She did think about it over the weekend. Painfully trying out many different conversation starters that may sound direct yet sweet enough. But it was fruitless as now, she has decided to pretend it never happened.
"You. Owe. Me."
It was a soft and familiar voice. Sapphire's ears perked up as she tried her best to hide the sparkle in her eyes. Was she finally able to find a clearing within the dark woods she was wandering in?
Sapphire felt a pressure on her wrist as she was tugged to walk a little faster. She tried to keep up with the other person's pace.
"Hey Saph! I was just wondering..."
Act coy. Be chill. Don't show your innermost emotions.
"So you're the sacrificial lamb?" she blurted out.
It sounded offensive the moment it escaped her mouth. Sapphire regretted it instantly.
Oops, that's not what I meant! Please don't take it the wrong way.
"Urm... I guess," the figure beside her held her hands behind her back, nervously.
Showing some empathy, Sapphire decided to turn the atmosphere around. "How about we talk over lunch? Don't worry, I'll keep it a secret between us," she linked her arms with Jade's and held her index finger up to her lips.
Jade cocked her head, a little amazed.
Sapphire then turned her body around and caught the other two expected physiques trying to eavesdrop their conversation. "Can I join you guys for lunch?" she smiled.
