Sapphire had been running around the streets for the past thirty minutes. With beads of sweat trickling down her forehead, she halted. She felt a sharp pain and grasped her chest. Bending down with her other hand on her knee, she tilted her head backwards and gasped for air. If anyone saw her right now, they would have thought she just ran a marathon.
She shut her left eye as a salty droplet missed her socket by an eyelash.
By now, the sun had dipped beneath the horizon and the golden that bathed their town had turned into gentle pale moonlight. It would be a picturesque landscape, especially with the chattering of people at a distance. Slightly muted, as if she was inside a box. She shook her head, as a gentle gush of wind slapped her face, bringing her back from her own fantasy. Sapphire had an important task to do right now, no time should be wasted.
He could not have gone far right?
Asher was still nowhere to be found. Not a single hair strand nor a single babble was seen or heard from him. She should have grabbed him first before chasing the dog.
Darn that stupid dog, she cursed internally. Her parents would never forgive her if she told them that she had lost him. No, she wouldn't even forgive herself.
Sapphire hung her head in shame and took a deep breath. As she was getting ready to cross the road when the man turned green at the stop light, she heard a voice in her head. A subtle voice telling her to visit the alley beside her instead of crossing the road.
It was unrealistic instruction, because the only thing this road led to was to the woods. Asher wouldn't have taken this path. Not willingly, at least.
However, the more she tried to shrug it off, the louder that voice became. She raised her eyebrows, shrugging. Trusting her own head made sense, right?
Instinctively, she prepared herself for the worst and followed her guts.
The alley was rather long and deserted. It was as if this area was purposefully isolated from the bustle of their town. Trees hovering over the road covered most of the moonlight, acting as an awning.
Sapphire turned her head, glancing back to the stop light she was from. Even the ambience felt a little different on this side of the street. Each step she took was a step closer towards the unearthly looking street hugged by an overgrown forest. By now, she was doubting her instinct.
This sure looks like a big mistake.
Just then, Sapphire noticed a familiar shade on the ground, a few meters away from her. She squinted her eyes, deciphering the object. Holding onto the faith of seeing her little brother soon, she became reckless. Without checking for vehicles, she propelled herself as fast as her legs could carry her across the road.
It was one of Asher's shoes.
Looking around warily, she realised that there was a majestic looking gate sitting a few feet in front of her. She couldn't recall whether there was a household in this section of Eternity Road, but it absolutely did not look welcoming at all.
Surrounded by black iron fences, the gate camouflaged with the dark atmosphere. Although the fences and gate were hollow, she was not able to look through the shrubs and plants that twirled around them.
