Chapter 08: Surprise

Laughter echoed the room as the Robinson siblings made eye contact with each other. They were in Jade's room, trying to make a video together.
"Shh! That was too loud, you need to slurp it quietly," Conrad whispered as he playfully poked Jade's cheek.
There were two opened and cooked instant cup noodles alongside with two pairs of chopsticks and spoons. Although the camera had been rolling for the past hour, none of them managed to consume the edibles that were laid out in front of them. As if it was rehearsed, everytime one of them took a bite or a spoonful of soup, they started chuckling.
Jade attempted to take another mouthful of her noodles, this time with her back facing her brother.
"How is this an ASMR if you eat it with no noise," he retorted while scratching his head.
Their work space was set up to tape an ASMR eating video. ASMR stood for auto sensory meridian response, which is a pleasant tingling sensation experienced by some people in response to a specific gentle stimulus, often a particular sound. The purpose of an ASMR video was to evoke satisfaction upon listening to the audio.
Realising her brother's comment, she choked on the noodles and spitted them back into the cup.
"Pause! Pause!" Jade gasped in between her laughter as she held her hands up in defeat.
Conrad didn't get the joke. He was genuinely confused with the rules of the game. However, seeing his sister laugh uncontrollably made him display a sweet smile.
She quickly jumped out of her seat and made her way to the camera, still trying to catch her breath. Taking the camera out of the stand, she rewinded the video. With her back facing her brother, she watched the whole recording.
Her facial expression turned from amusement to disappointment as she reached the end of the video. She grunted loudly and turned the camera off before placing it on her shelf. The fact that they had to stop filming midway was not the reason why she was upset. The reason was more... personal.
"I look so hideous!" she dived into her bed, hiding her head under her pillows.
Her brother sighed in adoration. She always looked pretty and cute in his eyes. He was used to this. Jade wasn't the most confident person. In fact, she had been too hard on herself ever since puberty hit her.
Despite his many attempts of reminding her that she was beautiful, Jade just wouldn't listen. It did not stop him from admiring her though. In fact, he loved to remind her repeatedly that she was never once ugly. Her most unglamorous state would still be considered adorable.
"What do you mean? You're a flower, the prettiest flower!"
"Then why is no one asking me out?" she rolled on her side, facing her brother, "I mean... Look at Dom."
"Because if anyone sees a pretty flower, they don't pick it. They admire it, sometimes from a distance," he inched his chair closer to the edge of the bed.
"Or maybe because the gardener is always around," Jade huffed, scowling at him.
Always adorable, no matter how weird you are. He fixed her airy bangs with a huge smile. She wasn't wrong though.
"I was just wondering, if I happen to find my prince charming..." she sat up, being serious all of a sudden. "Will you let me date?"
He looked at her straight in her eyes. He would have been able to drill a hole with those stares. Cupping her face in his hands, he gently shook her head from left to right. On top of that, he visibly mouthed the word 'no'.
