Isabelle's POV

I was in the kitchen, finishing up the dinner dishes when I heard the doorbell.

Drying my hands on my mom's burgundy hand towel, I went to answer the door. I opened it to reveal Officer Mike. Someone my family had came to know very well, thanks to Mikayla.

"Hi, officer Mike. How can I help you?" I asked, politely.

"Good evening, Ms. Bayer. Is your mother home?"

"Yes. Would you like me to go get her?"

"Yes."

"What is this about?" I asked, curiously.

"Just tell your mother I need to speak to her. This isn't a matter that concerns you kids."

"Um... Okay," I said, and began my trek towards the stairs.

I knocked on the bathroom door. "Mom?"

"Yes, Iz."

"Officer Mike is downstairs."

"Okay. Tell him I'll be right there." My mom said and back down the stairs I went.

On my way back to the door, I had many thoughts running through my mind.

What is officer Mike's business here tonight? Why is he making a house call so late? Why couldn't he just be straightforward with me and tell me why he's here? Does he have a thing for my mom? Is he here for Mikayla?

Only one way to find out.

"Come in, officer. My mom will be right down."

"Alright. I would've preferred that anyway."

"Oh? And why is that? Why are you really here? Did Mikayla do something?"

"Mikayla? Oh no, not at all. It's just police business."

Before I could say anything else, my mom walked in.

"Sorry about that, Mark. I was getting the baby ready for bed."

"It's quite alright, ma'am."

"What can I help you with?"

"Um... Well you might want to sit down."

My mom sat down, as I went to leave.

"Isabella. Would you stay? You're mom is going to need you." Officer mark asked me.

I nodded and went to stand next to my mother.

"What is this about?"

"I'm afraid I have to tell you that your husband, along with many other miners died in an underground explosion tonight. I'm very sorry."

"No! It can't be. Its not true."

"I'm very sorry ma'am but I'm afraid is."

I held my mother as she broke down.
