She removed her shoes and tiptoed into the living room with fear of running into Chris. She had seen his car parked in the garage and concluded that he had come home early.

The smell of fried chicken wafted from the kitchen into her nostrils making her mouth water.

He was cooking.

As she walked past the dinning room, she met him. Her heart did a quick spin and skipped some beats.

Thankfully, he had not seen her as he had his eyes glued to his phone.

She made to walk pass him but he coughed stopping her in mid track.

"You're back". He said calmly not looking up from his phone.

"Oh... I..didn't..see you there". She stuttered turning to face him.

He shook his head and looked up "How was your day?".

She pressed her shoes and her handbag to her chest.
"My day was fine". She paused "You're home early?".

He placed his phone on the table and folded his arms making his muscles bulge.
"Yes".

"I'll be up..."

He interrupted her sharply "Are you avoiding me?".

She acted surprised "What.... Avoiding you?, Pftt.. I'm not".

He stood making her heart race, she took a step backwards to secure a reasonable distance from him.

"If this is about..."

She held up her hand "I don't want to talk about it, it was a mistake that will never happen again".

Was it?, Or was she trying to fool herself into believing she didn't desperately craved for his touch against her skin.

She saw emotion flicker through his eyes and it vanished as he gritted his teeth.

"Fine". He said with no emotion "Your food's in the microwave".

What had she done?

He banged his fist on the wall pouring his annoyance into the punch.

He stared at his bleeding knuckles as what she had said kept ringing in his head, they reflected what he felt; battered.

Rejection. Rejection.

He had never felt rejected, hell! He had never been rejected. He was angry, angry at himself for letting his guard down.

Had he expected something different from her?.

No, he thought to himself. She definitely hated him.

He walked into the bathroom and washed out the blood on his fist in the wash basin. He watched as his blood flowed with water into the drain and wished he could magically disappear from his life's complications.

Wiping his fist with a towel, he walked out of the bathroom into the room.

On the bed sat a sober looking Lara, she had changed from her office clothes into a cute tank top and shorts.

Cute?. He shook his head, he remembered she didn't like the word.

"I didn't mean to make you upset". Her words felt soothing to him.

He shrugged emotionlessly "I'm not upset".

She nodded awkwardly and bit her lower lip.
"So, are we cool?".

"Yes".

"Friends?". She asked with a small smile.

But he didn't want to be friends with her. He wanted more. More than just friends.

He nodded "Friends".

She stood from the bed and walked to him, he felt his stance tense up.

"But I did dream of kissing you". She said batting her eye lids.

He felt a stirring in his groin.

What was she up to?

"Do you want your dreams to come true?". He asked sheepishly

She shook her head "Be'ko, let's not complicate things".

She gave him a toothy grin and walked passed him out of the room.

Was she flirting with him?.

Damnit! She had left him hot and bothered.

Well two could play the game, he thought with a wry smile.

And he did play the game.

The next three weeks had been fun, He kept sending her romantic texts every morning. Most times she would laugh and give him a silly comeback but some times she would giggle.

They had inevitably fallen into a routine; he drove her to work, visited her during her lunch breaks with a packed lunch, and picked her up.

Fortunately, their routine had made them badge the front covers of most Timeline magazines as Nigerian's sweethearts and he had been offered to perform in concerts with his wife of course.

Kcee had always insisted after seeing those magazines that Lara went with Chris on his every performance and had advised they give the audience a cute show.

"Did you see that, guys?. That was super, the audience loved your performance. And that last thing you did; kissing Lara on stage, it was spectacular". Kcee had said.

Chris had not kissed her, he had given her a quick peck on her cheek. But he wished for more, except he had to be patient.
