Lara had just stepped out of her office when her phone rang, fumbling and rummaging through her bag she muttered some inaudible words until she got hold of her phone. She peeked at the caller ID. It was her mum. She swiped the screen to answer the call while she adjusted the straps of her hand bag.
"Mummy, Ek'asan ma".
"My baby". Her mum's rich voice filled her ears. "How are you?".
"Mowa dada, iwo nko?". She asked pushing some braids that had fallen to her face behind her ear.
Her mum let out a sigh "I'm fine my dear".
"Mum... Are you okay?". Lara walked towards her car, she smiled at the guard that opened the door and climbed into the car.
"I'm fine, I have some news for you". Her mum said calmly.
"Oh okay". Lara nodded to the driver as he started the ignition. She leaned back relaxing into the seat while she had her phone pressed on her ear.
"Can you come over, I feel like this isn't something I should be saying over the phone".
Her heart hammered against her chest "Did something bad happen?". Lara asked.
"Radada, must something bad happen before I decide to talk to you?".
Lara shrugged "I don't know, you sound really scary".
Her mum gave out a rich bubbly sound of laughter "Everything's fine my dear, just come first".
"I will".
The line was cut as Lara let out a breath she didn't know she was holding but that was the least of her problems at the moment; at least her mum had reassured her that it wasn't some bad news. Her mind was occupied with the conversations she had with Chris, What if Cecilia is actually carrying his baby? what would become of her?.
When she asked Chris yesterday what they really were, she wasn't really expecting a tacky answer from him.
"We are what you want us to be". He had replied. But Heck!, She didn't even know what she wanted them to be."Take me to my parent's". Lara said to the driver who nodded and made a swift swerve.
As she sat in the car in comfortable silence, she stared out the window at the trees, sceneries, people and buildings as they went past her in a blur. She knew she was helpless concerning Cecilia's pregnancy, there was nothing she could do. And to make things worse, most internet news had scooped up some information concerning the pregnancy, though it was still considered a rumour. Lara pressed her temples and let out a sigh; she needed a publicist. But that wasn't all, she wasn't sure how she felt about Chris at the moment and though she had pent-up her anger against Cecilia, she understood Cecilia was doing what every woman including herself would have done; fighting to keep her man.
The car halted in front of the tall gate to her parent's mansion and after a few honks from the driver, the scrawny looking gate man opened the gates. He threw her a mock salute when she wound down her window and proceeded to close the gates after them.
"I'll come down so you can repark the car". Lara said to the driver as he stopped the car halfway to the garage. She alighted the car and strode in quick steps to the main entrance of the house.
She pressed the door bell and waited impatiently for half a minute before a maid flung the door open.
"Good afternoon ma, your mum's expecting you".

Chris walked into his parent's house, and the warmth the house gave filled him with nostalgia. The house held memories of some of his firsts. He pulled off his shoes and softly padded with his socks towards the living room.
"Daddy?, Mummy?". He called as he walked into the living room. His dad was sitted on a sofa at the far end of the room flipping through the pages of a newspaper; in front of him was a chilled bottle of malt as Chris could see the condensation on the bottle and a saucer of dry meats.
"Daddy, good afternoon sir". Chris greeted.
"My boy". Mr Chike said looking up from the newspaper. "This one you visited today, odikwa nma?".
Chris let out a chuckle and walked to his Dad "I wanted to visit my parents".
Mr Chike folded his newspaper into a neat fold and placed it beside him "You don't do this often".
"That's because I've been busy".
His mum walked into the dinning room with steaming plates and placed them on the table before turning to the duo.
"Is that my baby?". She yelled from across the room.
"Yes, but he's grown now". Mr Chike grunted.
His mum walked to him in quick strides and engulfed him in an embrace. Chris smiled at her; she smelt of curry and thyme.
"I am so happy for you". She said in wide grins.
Chris stepped away from her embrace "Maka gini?".
Mr Chike stood and tapped his shoulder "Cecilia was here yesterday".
"What?, Cecilia was here?".
"My son is finally a man, soon I will carry a grandchild from a responsible daughter-in-law".
"Mummy stop this". Chris said firmly and sat heavily on the sofa " Why didn't you tell me?".
His mum rolled her eyes "I just did, besides it wasn't necessary since we were coming to your house tomorrow"."It wasn't necessary?, That girl is lying, Why are you even coming to my house?".
His mum chirded him "What do you mean 'Why?', Ara odigi?, How can your pregnant wife be outside your home when you stay with a childless concubine?".
"Nkem, that's enough". Mr Chike chirped in "Let's eat and talk about this much later".
Chris fumed in fury, all he saw was red. He just worked hard trying to fix things up with Lara and Cecilia just had to involve his parents into the mess. What was wrong with her?.
Judging by his instincts, he knew he hadn't touched her but the best thing was to demand an ultrasound and a DNA test to prove the paternity of her baby.
