Phil's POV:

I got home tired because the walk from the park to my house was a pretty long one. I took off my shoes at the door and was about to head upstairs.

"Phil? Honey is that you?"

"Yeah mom it's me." For a while i forgot my mom was visiting me. Its been a year since my dad died so every now and then when my mom gets lonely she comes over for the weekend. She came up to me with mittens on. It smelled great in the house.

"I was just making some dinner do you want to wash up and I'll let you know when the food is ready?"

"Uh.. No. I'm not really hungry right now so I think I'm gonna go lay down for a bit. Thanks though." I went upstairs into my room before my mom could ask what was wrong.

I couldn't tell her why I was upset because I'm not even sure. Dan is perfect. And he likes me, he actually likes me. But for some reason I can't help but feel like it's all some big joke and he is laughing about it right now. I'm just... afraid. Afraid of getting hurt.

The more I thought about it the more sick I felt. I layed down on my bed and put in headphones. I wanted to drown out all the noise. I wanted to ignore the world and just get lost in my thoughts.

Through the music I thought I heard someone so I took out my headphones.

"Phil?" My mom was standing at my door.

"Yeah?" She walked over and sat at the edge of my bed.

"What's wrong sweetie? And don't say nothing because the last time you skipped dinner was when you were little and these horrible kids bullied you."

She was right. I always used to get picked on and never had many friends. The only time I ever skipped dinner was when I was upset or I was really thinking about something.

"I... I'm not sure. I like someone. And they said they liked me too but... I feel like its a joke and I'm going to get hurt."

My mom put her hand on my shoulder.

"Phil honey, listen, you can't let fear control you. Being in love is scary and I know you don't want to get hurt, but you have to give it a chance. It might be worth it later. Just don't stress yourself so much. Live in the moment."

I nodded and my mom gave me a hug. I loved my mom. She always knew what to say to help me feel better. She stood up and started leaving my room. Then she turned around to look at me.

"So I suppose you'll be wanting to eat dinner?"

I smiled and nodded then she turned around and closed the door behind her.

After eating dinner I went back upstairs and stayed in my room for a few hours playing video games.

I looked at the time on my phone and realized it was 1 in the morning. I was feeling tired so I was about to go to sleep when I got a text message.

Hey I know it's late but can we meet up?

It was Dan. I wasn't sure what he wanted but I did want to talk to him and apologize about earlier. I replied to his message.

Sure, the park again in thirty minutes. I'll see you there.

I got up and got ready to leave. I was walking out my door made my way towards the park. It took me about 20 minutes to walk there. It wasn't that bad since I had music.

Finally I arrived and saw Dan sitting on a swing. I waved and sat on the other swing next to him.

"Hi" I said. He smiled at me and said hi back. After a minute of awkward silence he spoke.

"Look Phil..  -"

"Wait. Before you say something I just wanted to say. I'm sorry about freaking out earlier. I just. I like you Dan. I really do. And it scares me."

"Why does it scare you?" Dan said looking at me very carefully.

"Because no one has ever liked me back. And I don't want to get hurt."

Dan had his head down and was quiet for a moment. Then he started laughing. I looked at him confused. Why was he laughing? Finally he stopped and told me why he was laughing.

"Phil, you are so adorable. I'm laughing because all this time I thought you didn't like me and I was going to tell you how I'm also afraid." He reached his hand down to grab mine. This time I didn't pull away.

I also started laughing realizing how silly I had been. I looked at Dan and smiled.

He looked at our hands and kept stroking mine with his thumb.

"Phil Lester I am really falling for you."
