Mike was living the teenage dream. It was surreal almost, to be as in love as he is with El. He only met her a few years ago, but within just a few months he knew she was the one he wanted to spend his entire life with.
They spent the whole day together. Nothing special, but the feeling of being with each other was enough to give them memories for a lifetime. The day is slowly coming to an end and Mike couldn't think of a better way for to conclude their day than to be driving down an empty highway as the sun set. The windows of his car were all the way down, the warm summer air whipping against their tan skin as Electric Love blasted out of the stereo.
Mike glanced over at El and he could just die right then and there. Her hair was blowing everywhere and she had the biggest smile on her face as she belted the lyrics of the song. He couldn't think of a time where he was this happy.
"All I need is to be struck by your electric love!" She sang happily, dancing around freely in her seat. Mike grinned widely as he glanced back at the open road ahead of him. The song slowly came to an end and another song began playing which was of course Just Like Heaven.
El turned to Mike. "This was the best day of my life." She beamed, grabbing onto his hand and squeezing it tightly.
Mike nodded in agreement. "I wish we could do this every day."
"We should! Let's buy a big van and live in it! We could travel all over the country and end every day like this. What do you think?"
He shrugged, "Doesn't sound like a bad idea. But that's a lot of gas money."
El rolled her eyes, "Always worrying about something, aren't you?"
"Not all of us can be as carefree as you, baby." Mike sighed, glancing at her with a smile.
"Well that's because I don't waste time worrying. Life is too short to let the small things get to you. Like Ferris Bueller says: Life moves pretty fast, you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." She quoted smartly.
Mike sighed, "I guess your right. But what about our friends? Are we never gonna see them again? What about Dustin and Lucas?"
"Well of course we'd visit them! But as far as I'm concerned, you're the only one I want to be with. Not those two knuckleheads." El giggled as she sat sideways in the seat, letting her feet hang out the window and her head resting on Mike's arm.
"If we crash, your legs are going to break."
"Oh shut up," She laughed. "We aren't gonna crash! Live in the moment, Mike!"
While Mike was always worrying and stressing over nothing, he simply rolled his eyes at the girl and looked at the road again. "Isn't the sky beautiful?" El gushed, now sitting up and sticking her head out of the window as if she wanted to get closer to the blazing sun.
Mike looked at the sky, which was turning pink and orange and bursting colors from every direction. Then he glanced at the carefree girl who had her whole upper half out of the window and he fell in love all over again.
"Yeah, it's pretty special." He said quietly.
El sat back down in her seat and sighed contently. She reached forward and turned the music up louder. After a few minutes she turned to Mike again, "Can you pull over?"
Mike furrowed his eyebrows, "Why?"
"Because I want to dance with you! I can't do that if you're driving!"
Of course, leave it to El to think of the weirdest things at the most random time. Nevertheless it sounded like total fun and he would never deny El of any request. Slowly he veered off to the side of the road and put the car in park.
El quickly turned the music up to the max volume and hopped out of the car, Mike following behind her. The song playing now was Walking On A Dream and El happily jumped around to the upbeat sound of it in front of his car.
Mike stood in front of her and a smile has not left his face all day. She grabbed his hands and started jumping around again, Mike doing the same.
"I'm surprised you aren't saying something like: We could get hit by a car." She giggled, impersonating his voice lowly.
"Hey, I'm just doing like you said. I'm not letting the little things get in my head."
"Good. These are some weak dance moves! Surely you've got better ones!"
"I don't see you doing any better!" He replied in defense.
She only rolled her eyes at him and stood on her tip-toes so she could place her lips on his. Mike has kissed her many times but there was something about this kiss that felt different than all the rest. Maybe it was the sound of Saturday Sun blaring in the background or the sun set coming to an end but it was purely magical.
El was the one to pull away, only to tuck herself in his arms and lean against his side as she watched the sun disappear in the sky.
"My dad's going to be mad if I get home super late.." She mumbled.
"Do we have to go back?" Mike whined. He wanted this moment to last for as long as possible.
"As much as I don't want to, we should.."
"Okay.. I guess you're right." They stood there for a while longer before El broke away from him and they both began walking to their respective sides of the car.
Maybe Mike should've looked at the seemingly empty highway before he stepped out onto it, but it didn't occur to him. No cars had passed by them during that time, so why should he have to worry?
"Mike! Watch out for the-"
Too late.
