Chapter 21

To save a life…

The pain was becoming more frequent, every three minutes. The doctor pulled gloves on to examine me as I lay on the exam table. She lifted my dress and folded it above my knees.

“You are going to feel a lot of pressure, Bri. Try to stay still.” She said as she began to check for dilation.

I held both of the twins’ hands as the pressure she spoke of began to turn into unbearable pain. I bit my lip to keep from screaming.

“I’m here for you, baby.” Evan whispered to me as he wiped the blood that was drawn from my lip.

I nodded but couldn’t pay much attention to him due to the uncomfortable feeling of the pressure and pain mixture.

“It seems as though you are in labor and the pain you are experiencing are your contractions. The bleeding is happening because it’s still too soon. I’m going to give you some herbal tea that should stop the contractions.” She informed us.

As we waited for her to fix the tea, the contractions came twice more. I was now sweating profusely from the anxiety for the babies’ health.

“Here, drink the whole cup.” She said, handing me the cup.

Evan helped me sit up to drink. I couldn’t even look at Callum in the eyes because of nagging feeling that I had caused this oncoming of labor by not consummating as the doctor said.

“Will both babies be okay after she drinks this tea?” Callum asked.

“As soon as she finishes drinking, I’m going to give her a few stiches on her cervix to keep her from dilating any further. She needs to be on bed rest for the rest of the pregnancy just to be sure this doesn’t happen again.”

I drank the gingery liquid despite the taste and handed the cup back to Dr. Elaine. I knew that the stiches would be painful but I would endure anything to keep the babies safe.

The smell of the doctor sanitizing the equipment needed for the stiches was making the anxiety turn into fear. I would be enduring the procedure without medicine for pain relief to protect the babies from unwanted effects.

“Bri! Bri! Wake up!”

I opened my eyes as I came back to consciousness. The first thing I noticed was that the sharp pain I felt down below. I could barely move without hissing from the agony.

“What happened?” I asked.

Evan brushed back hair from my forehead that had become matted from sweat. “You passed out from the pain but the stiches are in place and the baby is fine.” He said.
