Chapter 15

Saying Goodbye

I felt warm and when I opened my eyes I saw the source, the ignited fireplace of the pack doctor’s house. I started to wonder what I was doing here but then I remembered that I must have passed out once I laid in the rain for an hour. I got out of the warm bed that I had been bundled in and stood by the fire. My eyes landed on the mirror that was over the mantle.

My face was pale, nothing compared to my usual warm toned skin color. It was as bland as the long white nightgown I was wearing. My eyes were lifeless with no sign of happiness and no matter how long I stood in front of this fireplace, I remained cold. My inner fire had been extinguished.

I left the house before anyone came back and fled to the forest. There were too many things on my mind and this seemed like the perfect time. I wanted to punish myself for not protecting Kayden better, so I didn’t eat and I ran in human form till my feet bled. I let the tears fly off my face freely as I raced the wind to see who was faster.

I was about to take one last turn before I changed to my wolf but I didn’t make it, I tripped over a large tree stump that was covered by grass. The way my ankle twisted as I fell was a sure sign it would be broken once I hit the ground. I didn’t cry out though, I took the pain like the punishment I so deserved. I didn’t reach out to stop myself from hitting the ground and when I finally did,  my head hit it with such force that I blacked out.

“Bri…Bri!” A familiar voice called out.

As I opened my eyes, I started to cry once I saw who was in front of me. Kayden.

I lifted myself from the ground but groaned in pain as I felt the jolt from my ankle and the ache of my head.

“What the hell are you doing, Bri?” He asked.

“I don’t know. Maybe I want to die.” I replied, unable to look him in the eye.

I heard him coming closer and then I felt his hand on my cheek. “Look at me.” He said.

I did and was reminded of the beauty of his green eyes. The ones I used to stare into all the time. My tears started to flow like a fountain.

“Don’t do this to yourself! I can’t watch it anymore. I love you and I know you’re taking this thing really hard but it wasn’t your fault. Sometimes things like this happen to prepare you for harder things in life so promise me you’ll stay strong for what happens next.” He embraced me and I said one last ‘I love you’ to him as my vision faded back into reality.

I guess that was supposed to be my closure but I can’t get him out of my head just yet, the wound is so fresh. I sat up in a sitting position, well aware of the pain that was ailing me.

--------------Back at the pack doctor’s house------------

Evan’s POV

The doctor and I were walking back to the recovery room after updating my parents about Bri’s condition. I wanted to stay but the doctor kept urging me to come along for some fresh air. I hadn’t slept since I found her close to death. I was running on empty so my mom’s breakfast was just the thing that I needed.

I opened the door to check on Bri and see if she would come to. The bed was empty and the blankets were pushed down. The house was empty.

“Oh my, you have to find her! Her condition will only get worse if she doesn’t rest.” The doctor said.

I raced out of the door and picked up her scent as I ran through the woods. She wasn’t too far but the closer I came, the more I smelled blood. Panic was filling my thoughts and my heart begged for her to be safe.

As soon as I caught sight of her, I ran to her side and held her. She was crying again but I was sure if it was because of the blood that ran down her forehead, the broken ankle, or because of Kayden. I didn’t ask, I just held her close as I carried her back to recover. Recover from her pain and recover from her sadness, I’d be right by her side through it all.
