Bethany
Mum just told me grandma would be spending the weekend, I needed a few seconds to process it. The thing is my paternal grandma is fine, she's fun and always comes with goodies but my maternal grandma is such a disciplinarian, every time she comes she always has something concerning me to complain about unlike Tony whom she loves a lot.
It's either how I dress or how I'm always with my phone, she drives me crazy making me do chores that make no absolute sense while she tells my little sister Amy stories.
Mum said she would be arriving later in the evening so I spent all afternoon cleaning and polishing all the surfaces, although there wasn't much to do considering the house is still new.
Grandma arrived home about sunset, mum and I were setting the table when we heard the firm footsteps of grandma and the echoing words that followed.
"Emilie!!! come carry these luggage" mum rushed to the halls to see her mother, I followed closely behind.
"Good evening mum," she said collecting her things. "Take these to the guest room" mum mumbled handing me the bags.
While putting away grandma's things I got a text from Chris.
Unknown: Hey it's Chris😉
meet me outside at 8?Me: Sorry I can't family dinner tonight
Unknown: Alright I'll come over tomorrow if that's ok with you.
Me: Yeah sure but do you even know where I live?
Unknown: Of course, I do
Me: And you don't think that's a tad creepy at all.
Chris: Maybe, but let's just say I have my sources.
Well, I think Chris is really funny but the fact that he knows where I live is a bit weird.
I went back down for dinner, grandma kept telling stories from her childhood, it wasn't all bad, there was this particular story that got me laughing hard, who knew grandma was so naughty.
Everyone went to bed after a lovely dinner with a Cherry mood.
"I can't sleep...I can't sleep...I can't sleep" I kept repeating these words as the hours went by, I tried a whole lot of things; reading, watching tv, I was even listening to lullabies but of course, the sleep just wasn't forthcoming.
My mind started to drift between Chris and Joe, which reminds me I'll have to see Chris today and that makes me a bit nervous.
He has this sort of mystery I can't wrap my hands around, it's like he's just there when I need him; the plane and even the bar, he might be my guardian angel.
Joe's also pretty cool and quirky, he reminds me of my childhood days, the fun memories Justin and Kate and I had.
He's also an amazing friend."Bethany!!!" The echoes of her voice made me jump right out of the bed. "Bethany!!!" she called again, this time I knew I had to respond. "Yeah mum I'll be right there."
I didn't even have my bath, I just rushed down in a hurry. "Take these bags to the car, I'm running late" pushing some bags into my hand.
"Why are you in such a hurry?" I asked following closely behind her."I've got a really important meeting and I'm running late. Don't forget to make breakfast!" She yelled as she drove off.
Well that was certainly a fun way to start my day, I just wish I could get a little more sleep.
I was just about done setting the table for breakfast when grandma came in. "Good morning grandma, have a seat. I'll go get everyone down for breakfast.""Noooo I don't want to get up yet!!!" Amy protested.
"C'mon grandma's waiting." That girl really gives me a headache, I don't remember being this stubborn.Tony: Hey I left home early with Dad.
Seems Tony's not home either, I guess it's just grandma and me for breakfast.
"Hey grandma, it's just you and me for breakfast."
I had prepared some egg sandwiches, blueberry pancakes, and bacon. I couldn't wait to dig in as the aroma engulfed my nostrils.
"Hey, Grandma, where were you born?"Grandma stared into thin air as she started to speak.
" I was born in New Castle, Australia. I just love the atmosphere there, the turquoise-blue streams that flow through the tannin-brown forests, the gentle rustling of leaves as they move in the clear blue sky. The crispy clear green grasses and even the butterflies all still enchant me every time. I just love taking a walk in the sunset.""You know I still live there because honesty there's nowhere else I'd rather be."
"Aww grandma that's really sweet, I'm starting to consider moving there." Grandma just smiled at me. We spent the rest of breakfast talking about grandma's childhood experiences.
" I used to love playing hide-and-go-seek with my siblings, we'd go into the woods to get the best hiding spots. It seems I forgot how fun those days were, remind me to call my sister."
"Will do grandma" laughing at grandma's funny gestures.
"You know Bethany, you remind me a lot of your mum when she was in her youth. She was always on her phone and it always got me upset. She barely spent time with me and she also moved to California when she turned eighteen, our relationship was not the best and it's something I regret. I'm sorry if I seemed too hard on you.""It's okay grandma, I'll be more responsible from now on. I wonder why mum wasn't close to you, you're pretty fun."
" Thanks dear."
