CHAPTER 17 - STRANGER DANGER

The Dining Room
Hades' Palace
The Underworld

-Hades-

I think today went well.

There were some issues earlier today but the afternoon went better than expected. I didn't think my queen would forgive me so easily but she found it in her heart to do it. And now, I'm to have dinner with her. I hope this turns out better than our breakfast yesterday.

While waiting, I asked the servants to fetch me some wine. This was one of Dionysus' own special brews and I haven't had one in a long time. There just wasn't any cause for celebration or to drink for that matter. I downed another swig and it felt like liquid fire going down my throat.

And then suddenly, it was as if everything was in slow motion. Clutching the bottle closer, I tried to read the label but my vision wouldn't focus.

What the hell did I just drink?

As though under a compulsion, I took another drink. I didn't want to but it was as if my hand decided for itself. I almost fell on the floor as the world tilted sideways. I managed to catch myself and slumped in a corner instead. I made no move to rise. It was really comfortable here too. I took another swig of the scotch.

Suddenly, the emotions came pouring in.

I have my queen but she doesn't seem to want me. And what I've realized is that spending an eternity alone is an awful lot better than spending it with someone who does not like to spend it with you.

I sighed and then drank some more. What's not to like about me?

"Hades?" a soft voice said. I looked towards the source of the voice and I saw my queen. Slowly, she made her way towards me. Even far away, I marveled at her beauty. How could I get so lucky to be fated to someone so lovely to behold?

I must be really drunk then for my vision of her was fuzzy and the room was spinning. She approached me and knelt down beside me. I squinted to see her a bit more clearly. I ended up laughing. I did not know why but it felt good.

"What happened to you?" she whispered in a voice that didn't seem to sound like her at all. Did I hit my head as I fell?

I reached my hand out to her and she took it in hers. "Dionysus," I said. "Drunk," I added in case she didn't understand.

"I can see that," she replied. Was that excitement in her voice?

She giggled as she leaned closer. "Why are you drunk?" she asked.

"Because of you." I said it like it was the most obvious thing in the entire world. She frowned. "Why don't you want me, Aerith? Am I so difficult to like? Is the underworld a prison? Am I so abhorrent?" I asked her.

"No. I do like you. A lot," she answered quickly. I scoffed. And then I laughed again. Laughing just really felt good again. There was no reason to. It just felt right.

"Let me prove it to you," my queen said.

I said something but I don't understand what. "What?" I asked. She smiled and slowly leaned forward. And then she closed her eyes and pressed her lips against mine.
