"Today is a very special day," Niall teases as he enters the kitchen. You are laid out underneath the dining table next to Harry's feet where he idly rubs up against you every so often, and you watch as Niall's legs carry him over to your human.

"Don't start, it's not even nine." Harry's voice is groggy, still waking up from the deep sleep he had entered last night. You had half expected him to have a night terror but he had been completely still the entire night with his arms blissfully wrapped around your body.

"Well that's quite the attitude...aren't birthdays supposed to be fun and exciting?" By the tone and intonations of his voice, you can tell that your human's best friend is giving him a hard time. Clearly, Harry was not one for birthdays but your ears had perked up.

"There's no point in celebrating it. It's just another year." Inwardly you groaned at his sentiment but figured it probably had something to do with what Niall had hinted about the night before.

"If you say so H."

Niall had called a taxi just before noon and headed off, giving his friend a big hug.

"You take care of this one Selene," he'd said in that curious accent of his, "see to it that he doesn't get into anymore trouble." Niall had ruffled up your fur before throwing a quick wink at Harry and then disappeared into his cab.

At his departure, your human had let out the deepest of sighs before looking down at you wistfully.

"He's annoying but he means well." He shrugs with a lopsided smile before heading back inside while you watch his friend's taxi disappear around the bend.

It is curious to you that Harry acts like he doesn't want his friend around and yet his body language had been so relaxed the entire time Niall was here. You wish you could discover why it is he shies away from camaraderie but tell yourself that these things will divulge themselves with time. You must learn patience...even if you don't necessarily have patience to begin with.

"Alright darling. I need to go into town to the farmers market and stop by the shelter to see Annie about your lab results. Would you like to join me?" Your ears are peaked up in complete interest and you shuffle on your paws in hopes that he sees that you definitely want to go with him.

The house is not a home without him in it so any chance to stick by his side, you are completely game for.

"Alright, alright. Chill out. I've got to give you one thing though before we can go," he moves around you towards the guest bedroom, where you never go, and then reenters with something held behind his back, "I'd tell you to close your eyes but you're a dog and clearly wouldn't even know what I'm saying." Harry kneels down, with a wince, before drawing his hands out behind his back and holding a silver chain before you.

"It's a collar. I had it made when I picked out your name," He unclasped it and pulled it around your neck, fastening it into place. When he pulled back, fixing the tag into the center of your neck he leaned back further and looked at you bashfully, "look at you pretty girl." He looked you over thoughtfully and you wondered what it was he was internally musing about when he finally lifted himself up to standing, grabbing his keys and whistling for you to follow.

The clinking of the chain while you trotted behind him filled you with a sense of pride. It was odd to be collared by a human, you weren't entirely sure that it was a good thing, but you couldn't help the swell in your chest as he'd clipped it into place and looked at you adoringly.
