Warning: The follow chapter may increase hate for one, Dolores Jane Umbridge, by the tenfold.

Maddy filled a bowl with porridge and sat down, anxiously stirring it with her spoon, taking an occasional bite.

"You ready for today?" Simon asked, before eating the small amount of rashers he had put on his plate.

Maddy balanced the spoon in between her teeth. Depends. On what classes we have.

They didn't attempt to communicate at all until Professor McGonagall came with their schedules. She pulled two out of the centre of the pile, and handed it to the two of them.

"Your times with Ms. Daisley are on your schedule as well, Miss Lupin."

Maddy nodded. Thank you.

McGonagall gave her a small smile.

"We have double Potions today!" Simon exclaimed.

I don't want to see Snape, though. Maddy opened her schedule, and looked at what else they had that day.

Double Defence Against the Dark Arts, Flying, Double Potions, Transfiguration.

Doubles with both Umbridge and Snape. Maddy frowned. Do they want me to die today!

"Do you think we should go to Umbridge's class early?" Simon proposed. "We don't want her to hate us."

She probably already hates me. Though, that's not a bad plan.

Maddy shoveled the last spoonful of porridge in her mouth, and grabbed a strawberry off of Simon's plate, and plopped it in her mouth.

Follow me.

"That was my strawberry," grumbled Simon, but followed her out of the hall.

Maddy led him down a series of corridors and staircases.

"Do you know where you're going?"

Maddy nodded, and was about to answer when she heard, "Ickle firsties!"

Peeves! Run.

Not questioning, Simon bolted behind her, while Peeves continued the taunts.

"Look! Looky here! It's Little Loony Loopy Lupin!" Peeves floated behind them, "Madman Madeline is an ickle firstie!"

Maddy stopped, and Simon ran into her. Used to running into random things, Maddy caught herself. She turned to Peeves, waved, blew a raspberry in his direction, grabbed Simon's hand and ran.

Peeves must have been shocked that someone retaliated at his jokes, and didn't bother either of them. Still, they didn't stop until they reached the locked classroom door.

"Who — what was that?"

Peeves the Poltergeist. Maddy explained. Huge prankster, his whole existence is based on mischief.

"You'd think you two would be friends," commented Simon.

Maddy stuck her tongue out at him, crossed her arms, and didn't respond.

"You're here early," said a high pitched voice from behind them.

"Hello, Professor," said Simon politely, "we were so excited for your class that we just had to come early. Defence is just fascinating, isn't it?"

Maddy had a newfound respect for her best friend. Despite Maddy knowing he was much more mature than she was, he had an undeniable air of innocence about him. He was the type that you'd believe anything he'd say, just because he sounded so sweet. He widened his eyes slightly, like an unintentional puppy dog, and his voice raised an octave that you had to be attuned to hearing him speak to notice it at all. Everything he said sounded so genuine, as if he really was interested. If Maddy hadn't known that he disliked Defence (which Maddy couldn't understand. She loved Defence. But, she reasoned, she despised Potions, and Simon could spend hours reading and brewing) she would have been convinced he adored the subject.
