"What's on your wrists, Lupin?"

Maddy jumped, her eyes widened at the sound of Severus Snape's cold voice.

Simon stuttered, "she fell," knowing that Maddy didn't truly trust the professor that stood in front of them. The class hadn't started yet, but Simon had been so excited for the class that they arrived early.

Snape grabbed Maddy's wrist, and on instinct she pulled back, "I'm trying to help you," he sounded harsh, but she still held out her wrists.

"You didn't do this, did you?" Snape hadn't pinned Maddy as the type to physically harm herself. Snape knew she had a good home life, and an energetic personality. Her father, he was forced to admit, would probably have done something like that. He had so many scars, however, Snape doubted many people would notice. But Maddy?

Maddy shook her head, rubbing the raw skin on her wrists.

Snape took her hand, and examined it. "This looks like rope burn," he let go of her wrists. "Do you have any rope?"

Maddy ripped a small corner of her parchment and scribbled something down for Snape.

No, I don't. You probably do, though. Remember when you wrapped up my dad? I sure do.

Snape scowled at her, but frowned, "Did someone do this to you?"

Maddy's silence confirmed his suspicions.

"Who did this to you?"

Maddy held out her hand for the parchment and scribbled some more.

Why would you care? I'm just a wolf-girl hybrid who deserves nothing but death.

Simon leaned over and whispered, "I don't think that, Mads."

Snape frowned. What happened to the confident girl that he had become accustomed to? The one that reminded him of James and Sirius? The only time Snape had ever seen either of them act like this was Sirius, when Professor McGonagall tried to get him to admit what his mother did to him during summer break one year. Maddy lived with people who, despite Snape not liking, would never do something to her. Now that he thought of it, Maddy had acted out during the Sorting.

"That teacher!" said Allie, sitting next to her brother, who seemed confused about what was happening.

Most of the Hufflepuffs were frowning, and the Gryffindors were silent.

"What teacher, Summers?"

"The Defence one!" Simon yelled, "She tied Maddy up, and brought her to the front of the classroom, and made us write about how werewolves should be killed!"

"Abercrombie, do you have your notes from this morning?"

Euan pulled out his Defence notes, and handed it to Snape, who skimmed through them.

Werewolves ➜ Nasty creatures that deserve nothing but Death

Appearance ➜ Normal person. Full lycanthropes have lots of scars

Ministry ranking ➜ XXXXX

Madeline Lupin ➜ half-werewolf. Doesn't deserve to be here.

"Umbridge told you to write this?"

Euan nodded, "Word for word, Professor."

Snape frowned. He hated the girl, despised her even. But, he still thought she deserved to learn. Maddy, from what he had seen, was very enthusiastic about Defence, and being stuck in front of her whole class, told she was worthless, had to have blown a whole in her ego. Umbridge had taken it far.
