Frostshade led Icepaw over to a small stream. A gray she-cat stepped out from behind a tree. Icepaw let out a gasp of surprise. She arched her back, hissing and baring her fangs.
"This is Breezefeather," Frostshade explained hastily, "She's my m-"
"Mate?" Icepaw gasped.
"Friend," Frostshade stammered quickly.
"Only a friend," Breezefeather reassured the young apprentice.
"Why are we by RiverClan territory?" Icepaw asked, her eyes gleaming with such suspicion that Frostshade, nor Breezefeather could ever imagine. Icepaw forced her bristling fur to lie flat again, but her eyes still flew around warily.
"Breezefeather will be like a second mentor to you," Frostshade announced, "We will learn to hunt fish today."
"But this is against the warrior code!" Icepaw protested, "We're not supposed to hunt or be on another Clan's territory! And fish? Yuck!"
"Harestar allows it," Breezefeather meowed quickly, "Isn't your Clan hungry?"
"Does Harestar really allow it?" Icepaw asked, tearing up earth with her claws uncertainly.
"Harestar allows it," Breezefeather repeated.
Icepaw sighed, "How do you catch fish?"
"Wait until the fish swims by," Breezefeather instructed, "Don't let your shadow fall over the water, and suddenly swipe your paw into the river and scoop out the fish. Slice its neck, bury it, and give thanks to StarClan for it's life. Like this."
Breezefeather suddenly swiped her paw in the river and scooped out a minnow. The minnow tried to flop back into the water, but Breezefeather sliced its neck with her claws and buried it.
"Thank you StarClan, for this prey," she meowed solemnly.
"Wow!" Icepaw gasped, "That's amazing!"
"Thank you," Breezefeather replied, puffing out her chest, "Would you like to try?"
Icepaw nodded enthusiastically. By the end of the day, she collected her fresh-kill; a few minnows, trouts, and carp.
"Let's go back to camp," Frostshade decided.
Icepaw nodded. She couldn't speak; her mouth was full of prey.
They padded back to camp, to see a silver she-cat arching her back at Frostshade and Icepaw.
Moonpaw!
