Disclaimer: mention of 9/11 and suicide

what ever happened to when
we were shaped by the tales of our past
the goals for our future
and the kindness in our soul?

i guess when the towers fell, so did our pride
and when the markets crashed, so did our dreams
because now we're walking in circles
and no one knows how to talk anymore

wasn't there a time when the numbers on our permanent records didn't mean anything?
wasn't there a time when we could promise our parents we'd come home safe and sound?
wasn't there a time when we didn't need screens to hide behind?
it seems we forgot how to talk

tell me why
your lips are moving
but i don't hear you
and i can see you smiling
but your eyes are lying
and i know you're trying
but you've been denying
what you don't want to believe

so why don't we talk about it?
why don't we talk about how it's almost 2020 and
3 million people live in poverty
120,000 people are in concentration camps in Kashgar
80 percent of energy consumed comes from fossil fuels
and suicide is the third leading cause of death for young adults

why don't we talk about how 42,000 immigrants were detained by ICE last year
how 40 million people have been human trafficked
8 million tons of plastic enter our ocean
and
the president has been impeached by the House

maybe we grew up too fast, or
maybe we didn't grow fast enough
maybe we did something wrong or
maybe we just need some more time
but i guess we'll never know
because we find comfort in liking, commenting, and reposting

but i guess we never want to talk about it
