*Clay McGinn's P.O.V.*
"Oh, Clay," Gram says as I step into our living room. Gramps looks at me proudly as Gram fussily straightens the collar on my neatly ironed dress shirt. Gramps ruffles my spiky brown hair.
"Guys, c'mon," I laugh good-naturedly. Gramps cracks a grin and Gram just smooths my collar out some more. I've lived with my grandparents my whole life; I never knew my own parents. We live in the middle class area of District Six, our home cozy and worn, yet in the good way. Gram, Gramps, and I step out of the house and walk towards the square, chatting together. I notice the looks that alot of the girls are sending me; I'll admit, I've got good looks. But, I've sworn off love ever since my ex, Naomi, cheated on me.
I bid my grandparents goodbye as I head off towards the sixteen-year-olds. My friends, Clark and Drew, are there. We all joke around happily, forgetting our surroundings until Yasmin Paliste begins to call out the girl's name.
"Well, let's get started! Today, our lucky girl is...Belle Li!" Yasmin yells through her purple-painted lips. A fourteen-year-old with long brown hair walks towards Yasmin, trembling. Belle Li...isn't that the girl who lives on the streets, but is rumored to have had secret peacekeeper training? "And now for our boys..." Yasmin fishes around for a piece of paper, "...Clay McGinn!"

"You'll do fine, Belle," I mumble to myself over and over as I enviously watch Clay McGinn say goodbye to his teary grandparents. I have nobody to say goodbye to, so I awkwardly stand to the side. I have to admit, Clay is pretty cute. I've heard that Naomi, his pretty ex, cheated on him with some high school senior. Clay's grandparents leave and I look away, saying good-bye to my home.
"How do you feel about this?" A voice from behind me takes me by suprise. Clay's looking at me expectantly.
"I don't know, really. I think I might have a small chance," I reply, feeling small.
"Same here. Tell you what? Let's be allies. I know we both can't win, but it'll help us stay alive longer," he offers, holding out a hand. I survey it and take it.
"Allies," I say, shaking his rough hand.
