Imagine you're sat in your best friend Nialls room. He seems on edge and is unable to pay attention to your conversation. You stay silent for a few seconds but he doesn't notice and continues to stare at his phone. He plays with his hair and then throws his head back in a groan.

"Ni, what is it?" You tentatively ask.

He jumps, seemingly startled, like he forgot you were even there. "Um, its nothing Y/N/N." 

"As if I believe that. C'mon tell me the truth, what happened to us being best friends and telling each other everything?" Even as you say that your stomach feels uneasy as you think of the one thing that you haven't told Niall. 

He sighs but then cracks a small smile that makes his eyes twinkle. Much to your annoyance, your stomach flips over as soon as the corner of his round lips turn up at the sides. "Okay Y/N/N, I'll tell you but first you have to promise not to say anything to anyone." He brings his hand close to you with his pinky sticking out. You take it in your pinky. "I promise Nialler."

"Well, I've been talking to this girl and it's her birthday next week and I just asked her if she wants to go out for a meal as my birthday treat, you know, as a date. So I'm just waiting for her to reply and it's torture.  I really like her, Y/N." His cheeks flush a light pink colour which gives him an almost angelic glow. He looks at you from under his long eyelashes to see your reaction. You clap your hands together. "Wow! That's so exciting! I'm sure she'll reply soon, don't worry! Eek, I'm so happy for you!" You think you may have overdone it but his smile grows as you breath a sigh of relief. "Thanks Y/N/N."

Although you said those words, you feel no level of excitement, instead your stomach dropped and you felt uncomfortable, even though you want Niall to be happy, you can't help but wishing you were the one that could make him happy and not just in a platonic way, because although you would never admit it, you were impossibly head over heels in love with your best friend.
