Imagine you're at a fireworks display for new years. You wanted to have a nice time with your friend as this was the first time you'd seen each other in a while but she ditched you for some random guy who she deemed to be good-looking.
As a result, you are stood by a wall by yourself, this alone would be enough to make you miserable but the added coldness of the evening and how everyone else seems to be having an amazing time, just makes your misery even more evident, to yourself and everyone around you.
It draws closer and closer to the midnight fireworks, which seems exciting for everyone else, but for you it is everything but. It takes all of your willpower to stay put and wait for the new year to occur, for what reason though, you don't know. Maybe it's your insatiable fear of missing out, although at this point, you're not certain as to what you would miss out on. Probably, more over-excited, tipsy people having a good time whilst you become more isolated as the night drags on. Your mind runs over all the things you could be doing right now if you were at home; a warm bath followed by a pamper session, perhaps a warm cosy movie night in bed or even just scrolling through your social media to await the new year. Even though all of this seems appealing to you, you don't find yourself moving towards the exit. Instead, you continue to wait.
Ten. Nine. You begin to count down with everyone else. Eight. Seven. You feel too stupid to count down aloud so you do it in your head. Six. Five. Your head turns to the sky ready for the fireworks. Four. Three. You rub your hands together and blow on them, trying to warm them slightly. Two. One. "Happy new year." You murmur to yourself.
Bangs and crashes. Fizzles and pops. Booms and cracks.
Above your head a colourful assortment of fireworks are lighting up the sky. For a minute, you are fooled by the beautiful shapes patterning the night sky, almost forgetting how lonely you feel. Almost.
About to set off for the exit, you turn, expecting to see an empty space like there was before but instead you see a young, attractive man, wearing a white shirt, with a serene expression upon his face. With the bright lights reflecting off his face, you could almost describe him as angelic.
Eager to finally go home, you decide to walk past without acknowledging him. But clearly he has other ideas. "Leaving already?" He asks, not turning away from the display.
"Yeah." You don't feel up to a conversation now, all you want to do is return home to your warm bed.
"Shame, it really is a beautiful display." He spoke gently, making his Irish accent seem melodic.
"Hmm. Yeah, I guess." You mumble, beginning to continue on your way to the exit.
At this point he turns and faces you.
"Are you sure you really want to leave? You'd be missing out on this spectacle."
"Well, the longer you talk to me, the more you're going to miss out on this beautiful display."
The man laughs a quiet but genuine laugh, before turning his back on you. "Fine, suit yourself." You can still hear his odd chuckle as you walk away. After a few steps, you hesitate and look back at the man, maybe you should stay a bit longer you think to yourself. Something about this man intrigues you, entices you even. You can't help but turn around and walk to his side.
Without facing you he asks "Changed your mind, have you?"
You nod. "Suppose I don't want to miss out on anything." You study the mans face as he finally faces you once again.
"Of course you don't," He holds out his hand. "I'm Niall by the way, nice to meet ya."
"I'm Y/N. Nice to meet you too."
A charming smile stretches across his face as his eyes seem to twinkle. You return the smile and without another word, you both turn back and watch the fireworks.
