Zak rolled over in his bed, eyes refusing to stay shut for more than a moment or two. He was exhausted, but his body refused to go to sleep. Darryl was still up editing, so Zak didn't have the company in bed that he was used to.
Slowly, Zak sat up. He swung his legs out of the bed and shuffled down the hall to the recording room. The door creaked open and Darryl turned around, his face illuminated by the light from the computer.
"Zak? What's up?" he asked, concerned.
"I can't sleep," Zak said.
"You want me to come sleep with you?" Darryl offered.
"You don't need to, you can just stay right there." Zak crossed the room and sat in Darryl's lap, his legs through the arm rests. He wrapped his arms around Darryl's waist and laid his head on Darryl's chest, listening to his heartbeat.
Darryl chuckled, the vibration it sent through his chest causing Zak to smile in content.
Zak closed his eyes. "Can you sing something to help me fall asleep?"
"Like what?"
"I dunno, anything."
Darryl gently rubbed Zak's back as he thought for a minute, before inhaling and beginning to softly sing. "I could never find the right way to tell you; have you noticed I've been gone? 'Cause I left behind the home that you made me, but I will carry it along. And it's a long way forward, so trust in me; I'll give them shelter like you've done for me, and I know I'm not alone, you'll be watching over us until you're gone..."
Zak opened his eyes and frowned slightly. "I don't like that one," he mumbled.
Darryl frowned. "Why not?"
"'Cause of that last line. 'Until you're gone.' I don't like the idea of being apart from you."
Darryl smiled. "Aw, Zak..." he gently stroked Zak's fluffy black hair, prompting the younger boy to look up. "I'll never leave you, don't worry."
"Promise?"
"I promise."

"Darryl..."
Zak choked out the name through his tears at the sight of his boyfriend, lying on a hospital bed, the only sign of life being the steadily beeping monitor next to him.
"...Why did you lie to me?"
