Ten o'clock was early for Stacy during the vacation. Her late night study sessions were limiting her weekend sleep. She rolled out of bed and to the bath. She had another Maths session at Starbucks. She'd have lunch and treat herself to two venti Dulce de Leche Frappuccinos since she'd be there until seven. Then a cartoon, bed and repeat.
She'd already ordered when Martin and Maria waltzed in. They were so slow that she often made excuses when they requested to study with her. Most of the usual crew were busy completing SBAs. Hers were done and she really wanted to get some past paper practice done. Her study regimen was created to earn all Ones with all As in all subjects'. She really wanted to repay her parents for their hard work and she despised laziness and distractions.
Martin and Maria didn't want to get anything and actually pulled out waterbottles. Stacy tried not to roll her eyes, grateful that at least she wouldn't be labelled a cheapskate at the table. She was ready to lead the session when Mark rushed in and threw himself into a seat. They worked for three hours straight and completed an entire past paper even with their discussions. She mentioned the same and Martin laughed. "We not holding you back today?" Stacy blushed when she realised that they all seemed to know her thoughts. The three laughed and launched into a conversation about their part time jobs.
"You have actual jobs?" They all turned to look at her and Stacy felt disconnected from them all. Maria rolled her eyes and began, "We're not all rich, inconsiderate-" "Let's continue!" Mark interjected while Martin glared at his sister. The rest of the session was uneventful, but the atmosphere was more tense. When she got home she skipped the cartoon and called Mark for an explanation. She felt like an absolute fool when she got off.
She always counted diligence in terms of academic excellence and a superior routine. Her parents had allowed her freedom and she was only required to produce superior academic results. She never expected that she knew students who had to be hardworking before they finished Secondary School. Mark did freelance graphic design jobs. Maria and Martin worked in their family's bakery and were often working by 3 a.m. Maria also had dance classes. She found out about other classmates who weren't as lazy as she thought.
Stacy was grateful for her schedule without chores or jobs except schoolwork, but she felt chagrined for thinking less of her classmates and laughing at them. She created a free online classroom where students could discuss assignments and learn from each other. It was a small start, but she hoped she could help all the hardworking students.
