The bell rings, signaling a guest entering the building. I feel my body jump out of my skin. I've been doing this all afternoon. At every sound, I flinch. My paranoia is off the charts. I can't help but feel as if I am being watched.
Am I going to be his next victim? The thought of him watching Jesse and I sends shivers down my spine. If he has a camera in Jesse's truck, there's no doubt he could have one here.
"Hi, excuse me! I'm here to check in. I have a reservation."
I look up to see a girl about my age. Clearly she's from the city. Her white bedazzled hat and boots give her away completely. "Hi, yes, what's your name?"
"Jessica Cartwright."
Searching the system I see that she's staying in cabin number five along the river. "Okay, great! I will need some ID, a credit card for the charge and deposit."
Jessica hands her ID and credit card before making small talk.
"Wow, this is such an amazing guest ranch! Do you enjoy working here?"
Putting a smile on my face I try to act more enthusiastic than I feel. "Yes, I love it. There's so many fun things to do." Grabbing a brochure I point out the layout of the ranch, and the hikes around the area. Then I grab a few more to show her the activities, such as rock climbing, white water rafting, horseback riding, fly fishing, etc...
Jessica's eyes go wide with excitement.
"Wow, this is so exciting! So different from New York."
Called it! I knew she's was from the city. "Okay, well welcome to Montana. Here is your key. You will be staying in cabin number five. I really hope you enjoy your stay! If you need anything, our office is always open. Please don't hesitate to call."
Jessica smiles with a look if gratitude in her eyes.
"Thanks, I'm sure I'm going to love it!"
Taking the brochures, I watch as Jessica leaves. When the door closes I here my phone ding, signaling a text message. The number is unknown and I instantly freeze, but then the thought that it might be Jesse makes me curious.
"I see you."
Shit! I glance around, but there's no one in sight.
"How did you get my number?"His response is quick.
"I have my ways."
I guess it doesn't matter how he got it, it just matters that he has it. "Why are you doing this?"
He doesn't respond for a while, and I begin to wonder if he will even reply. When I hear his message come in, my hands shakily open it.
"Why wouldn't I? That girl.... Jessica right? She's hot! Maybe I will have some fun with her as well"
This guy's pissing me off. He just wants to scare me. I decide not to send a response. Instead, I get busy cleaning the office. As I'm dusting the furniture, the bell rings, and I turn on my heels to face whoever's there. My pledge spray is in hand, facing forward, and ready for contact. Relief washes over me when I see my Aunt Kim standing there.
"Lex, you know you don't need to clean. The housekeepers clean the office every evening."
I place down the pledge and laugh. "Yeah, things have just been a little slow, and I wanted to stay busy. I've had a lot on my mind lately."
Kim gives me a sympathetic look. "Sweetie, please sit down!"
I do as I'm told as my aunt continues.
