The ambulance, and the police finally arrive. After getting a police report they load Jesse and I into the truck. Apparently I had some minor injuries they wanted to look at.
My body ached, but all I could think about was Jesse and if he would be alright. The messengers threat hung over me like a dark cloud. I wasn't ready to say goodbye. I tried to think of a way out of this dilemma, but came up with nothing.
Once we arrive at the Hospital in Bozeman, they separate Jesse and I, and take us to separate rooms. I beg them to let us stay together, but they refused to listen.
After examining me, they realized that I would be just fine. I ask the nurse to let me see Jesse.
"I'm sorry, but at this time family is only allowed."
Swearing under my breath, I brainstorm ways to see him. Before the nurse leaves, I speak up. "I'm his half sister, different Dads. Please, let me see him!"
The nurse, Jackie, gives me a sympathetic look.
"Do you think I'm stupid? I could get fired if I help you out. Look, I'm going to run and get you some more pain medicine. Don't do anything rash!"
I watch as Jackie places a stack of papers down on the counter. She gives me a look, and I don't miss the hint in her eyes.
Once Jackie is out of the room, I quickly walk over to the papers. Shit, I don't know Jesse's last name. Quickly, I scan my eyes over the arrival times. Finally, I see a Jesse Logan that arrived the same time I did. He's in room 1004 B, the intensive care unit. My heart rate Instantly picks up. If something happens to him I will never forgive myself.
Sliding off the bed, I begin exiting the room. When I get to the doorway, I poke my head out to make sure no one is coming. With no one in sight I sneak my way to the reception area. "Hi, can you tell me how to get to 1004 B?"
The nurse looks me up and down in suspicion.
"Are you family of the patient?"
"Yes, I'm his sister. We were in an accident together, and I just want to make sure he's alright."
She smiles at me and begins giving me directions to the room.
"Just go straight down the hall to the elevator. Take it up to the second floor, and then take a right. It should be on your left."
I voice my appreciation, and make my way down the hall to the elevator. As I stand there waiting for it to arrive, anxiety takes over. My body starts to shake, and my palms become moist. I'm so worried that someone is going to see me and stop me from seeing Jesse.
Once the elevator arrives, relief runs through me. I step inside, and press the button for the second floor. It isn't a long ride, and when the doors open, I about tackle the people in front of me trying to exit.
When Jesse's room is in site, my nerves start to settle. Pushing the door open I see Jesse's body bandaged and laying unconscious on the bed. His wounds were so severe I could barely recognize him.
Walking up to the bed, I take a seat beside him. Placing my hands over his, I let my tears fall. I couldn't help but feel that this was all my fault. If I had just done what I was told, none of this would have happened. I hear my phone ding in my purse. Grabbing it, I read the text.
"Did you obey?"
He can't see me? The reality of the situation makes everything better, and a plan forms in my head.
"He's unconscious, but I will tell him as soon as he wakes up.""Good girl! You don't want to disobey me again. This time was a warning. Next time I won't show any mercy."
Placing my phone back into my purse, I take Jesse's hand in mine, and give it a soft gentle kiss. "I'm so sorry I got you into this mess."
