Adam's POV
I walked out of the hospital with my left arm in a cast which was in a sling. While we made our way across the parking lot, dad was giving me a lecture about how I'm suppose to wearing safety gear when I ride my skateboard then he went on to how I'm never going to get a job or a family and I'm going to get old and die alone. That ticked me off.
"Shut up!!" I shouted angrily at my dad, "Stop lecturing me about every little thing I do wrong! Does it make you feel better to make me feel worthless?"
I glared at dad. He frowned.
"Adam, I'm sorry okay? I really am. Why didn't you tell me earlier?" He asked
"'Why didn't you tell me earlier'" I said in a mocking tone. I gave him the death stare and I continued, "I tried dad! I've been trying ever since I started high school! I tried talking to you about Breanne but you wouldn't listen. You never listen to what I have to say!"
Now anger was boiling inside of me as I waited for dad to respond. Two minuets seemed like forever and he finally said softly,
"I'm sorry, son."
Then he walked away with his head bent down. I heard mom sigh and I looked at her. She was frowning at me.
"I know you hate your father Adam. But maybe you should make amends with him. He loves you very much," mom said. Then she changed subject and said,"Breanne is waiting for you. You better go see her."
Without her waiting for me to respond, mom headed towards the car. She stopped, looked at me with a look of sadness, and said,
"Maybe it'd be best if you didn't come home tonight or y'know for a while until everything gets under control."
Then she turned back around and I watched her get in the car. Then one of my parents started the car and they drove off leaving me behind in the parking lot. A mix of emotions ran through me as I took in what just happened. My parents don't want me. I guess that's what I deserve, I told myself as I started walking in the direction of the ice cream place.
A few minuets later I walked into the ice cream place and I saw Breanne sitting in a booth. She stood up and I forced myself to smile even though I felt like crying.
"How long do you have to wear the cast?" She asked while glancing down at my arm.
"Eight weeks. Not as bad as I thought it would be," I replied while I looked around the shop.
It was small with bright blue walls and on the back wall was the freezer with the different flavors of ice cream and the place wasn't crowded. I made eye contact with Breanne and in silence we went to get our ice cream. I got strawberry ice cream while Breanne got rocky road. We got to the other counter to pay. The cashier and I made eye contact. I recognized her.
"Hey AnnMarie," I said, "I didn't know you got a job here."
She smiled. "Yep. I got it last week," she said.
"That's cool," I heard Breanne say.
AnnMarie looked at her with a bitter smile on her face and she said, "Oh hi Breanne. So Adam lied to you about getting a job at the coke factory. In fact he's lied to you about a lot of things. Like he replaced you over the summer. While you've been gone Adam and I have-"
"Shut up, Ann," I said sternly, "how much for the ice cream?"
"It's free for the two of you. Now go on and enjoy your day together," she said.
I glared at her as I got my ice cream and we went to a table.
Breanne's POV
I sat across from Adam eating my ice cream. Why would he lie to me about getting a job? And why would he lie to me about spending time with AnnMarie? I wondered as I looked at him. He wouldn't make eye contact with me and his face was bright red.
"Adam. I understand why you lied about getting a job," I told him.
That made him look at me.
"You do?"
I nodded my head.
"Yeah. It's because of your dad. I know how much you hate him and how he's always pushed you too hard," I said.
A smile slowly spread across Adam's face. He asked me how I knew.
"Adam Randal Young, I know you. And by the look in your eyes I can tell that you fought with your parents before you came here," I said.
Adam's smile faded and he stared at his ice cream. I saw him wipe his eyes and he sighed shakily. Like he was trying not to cry. I frowned and I apologized. Adam said it was fine and we continued to eat our ice cream in silence. When we finished, we left and we walked around town.
While we were walking, I was listening to Adam as he told me about what happened during his summer and he told me what happened after he got his cast on. I felt sorry for him.
"I don't know what to say Adam," I said, "so huge change of subject but do you have a crush on anyone?"
Adam stopped walking and he stared at me with a playful smile on his face.
"I have a crush on a girl who you know," he said, "who do you have a crush on?"
I smiled "I have a crush on a boy who you know."
Adam smiled and he laughed softly. I playfully hit him and then he chased me through town. We ran around yelling and laughing until it was dark out. Adam and I walked hand in hand down my street. I told him he could stay at my place for a while.
"Are you sure? What if your parents-"
"Adam my parents would love for you to stay. They haven't seen you in a while," I said as we walked to the front door of my house.
We went in and I saw my parents fixing a light bulb in the hallway. Dad saw us, got off the ladder, and he smiled.
"Hey Adam," he said.
"Hello," Adam replied softly.
Mom greeted Adam and I quickly told them what happened with Adam. When I finished telling them, there was silence until mom said,
"Yeah of course you can stay Adam. John why don't you show Adam the guest room upstairs."
"Okay," dad said.
Then he led Adam upstairs. I sighed heavily as I removed my shoes and I gave mom a hug.
"Is Adam the one you have a crush on?" Mom asked after I let go of her.
"Shh! He may hear you!" I warned, "but yes. Does it seem weird that I have a crush on my best friend?"
Mom shook her head 'no.' Then she told me that I need to go to bed. I nodded my head in understanding and I went upstairs. I walked down the hallway and I reached my room. I went in and I quickly put my pajamas on then I went back out just as dad walked out of the guest room.
"How's Adam?" I asked
"He's fine sweetie. Adam fell asleep pretty fast," dad said, "and I think he likes you but I could be wrong."
I blushed and I gave dad a hug goodnight. He kissed my forehead and he went downstairs. I smiled to myself as I went back into my room. I decided not to bother Adam since he's had a long day. Then I closed my bedroom door and I crawled into bed.
I sighed as I pulled the covers near me. My mind was thinking about Adam. When should I tell him that I have a crush on him? I asked myself. It shouldn't be right away though. We need to get comfortable with each other. Then I'll tell him, I told myself as I said a silent prayer. Then I closed my eyes and I fell asleep.
